Canadian in California

I am a Canadian living in California. When I moved here I gave up on firearms, assuming I could not own them as a non-citizen. When I found out that I could, I bought 5 handguns within that first year and got my CCW permit, something that is not easy to do in this state.

I registered about a week ago. This is a pretty good forum. Even though I am in the US, I think I'll stick around. This forum will help me stay connected with my homeland and the issues I am passionate about. I'll have to play catch-up though since I've been living here for the last 7 years. I still don't know who Wendy is.

I have to hand it to you guys. The comments and perspective of many of you regarding the VT shooting are "better" IMO than can be found on many of the "American" gun forums I frequent. However, I have to admit that I am a little dismayed and bewildered by the comments of some members, which remind me how Canada ended up in the situation its in when it comes to gun rights.

Having my CCW permit and being a Canadian citizen, where gun control is the norm, I am thankful every day that I have the opportunity to take steps to ensure my own safety beyond the boundaries of my property. I definitely do not take it for granted and it has made me want to fight for gun rights even more.

Living here, I see how many of the stereotypes that I grew up with of Americans and their guns are not accurate. I've discovered that Californians are generally anti-gun as many urban Canadians are. Although its not nearly as bad as Canada, we have our own battles going on here.

I guess that's all I have to say. Thanks for letting me be a part of your forum.

how prevalent is it?
Not very. Its actually pretty difficult to get one, but it all depends on what county you live in. Only Police Chiefs and County Sheriffs have the authority to issue permits. Most are issued by the Sheriffs since the Police Chiefs are just the lap dogs of their Mayors. The problem is Sheriffs down here are elected officials (weird, I know) and many use CCW permits as status symbol rewards to major campaign contributors. I am fortunate enough to live in a county where the Sheriff actually wants to issue permits and does so as fairly as he can while still complying with state law. My county is the largest (population) urban county where it is relatively easy to get one. You can forget about it in LA, San Diego, Sacramento, or San Francisco. Its strange that I can get one, and then drive 15 minutes north into a jurisdiction where the locals can't, even though the crime rate is much higher there.

Thanks. I'll google her and find out what her deal is. Sounds like the Canadian version of Sarah Brady.

Welcome, having lived a good part of my life in the US (California Included) I welcome your perspective and the differences it may bring to the forums.

Welcome from Ontario. The Kalifornia of the North. Wendy Kukier aka: Wicked Wendy is a Liberal / socialist misinformed egghead who thinks that her utopian vision of the world is for everyone. They drag her out every time there is an " incident " to spout her views.

BC is the California of the north, though maybe not so much on guns they seem to thrive there? Ontario is a combination of Alabama and New York.

"Its strange that I can get one, and then drive 15 minutes north into a jurisdiction where the locals can't, even though the crime rate is much higher there."

That's probably pretty typical. Sorta like the distribution of capital punishment. Imagine as system that operated on the reverse principle. Wait a second, that might be Canada!

Wendy has been busy:

You never really have to worry about your opponents, if your arguments are good. Your arguments are probably going to be perceived as week if all they consist of is ad homonym attacks on your opponent.

Actually she is just a stupid ##### in my opinion, no need to sugar coat it for me. When ever I see her #####ing about guns on TV, I just want to kick the damn thing. She damn well tried to defend Bill C-68 all the way saying how it would stop gun crime, when it was clear what her real agenda was. Attacking law obiding citizens. Back in the mid nineties when this latest round of BS law was coming into effect, that thing was getting all the media attention.

Cukier you suck!

Anyhow welcome to the forum, My question to you is HOW DO I GET ON THE CALIFORNIA PROGRAM, OR ANY SUNNY SOUTHWESTERN STATE PROGRAM? I had enough of winter, and anti gun liberals.:) Know anyone who needs an Instrumentation Techician????

If you had enough of anti-gun liberals then you definitely don't want to come to California.

Instrumentation Technician...sounds like someone who works on DOD contracts to me. We have Boeing, Northrop Grumman, etc down here. I know a guy who used to work at TRW up your way. ;)

While I disagree with Wendy sharply, I have to admit she is a very intelligent person. I interviewed her a few years ago, she is very smart and well footed, and a very talented debater. It is also extremely hard to catch her off guard.

While my distaste for her actions is considerable, I do respect her political potency and what she has been able to accomplish. If only we had a few people like her on our side. In the end, I wouldn't want to do away with opposition like Wendy Cukier, as then democracy would cease to function. When I interviewed her, she was also quite respectful of the pro-firearms community in Canada and lauded their efficacy.

Well this rant is probably going to get me in trouble, in this day of political correctness, and sensitivity towards others and their opinions, I can't help but put this out there because this is how Wendy Cukier made me feel back in the nineties with her attack on my rights and freedoms. I never publically had an opportunity to fire back at her. Well this will have to do.

So here goes. Sorry guys but I am getting older now, and just ain't holding back anymore.:(

Well I can't argue that my post must sound like something from trailer park boys but geez man, For anyone to get in front of the public, intelligent or not and try to logically defend bill C-68 As something that will prevent another poly tech occurrence and gun crime in general is just utter nonsense. She is nuts plain and simple. Take those excellent debating skills and do something good, like become a pro gun lobbyist. The real tragedy at Poly Tech, sorry to say in my opinion, is why did those cops just wait outside while the #### strolled around and hunted those women. You see the news clips over and over again of them just waiting outside not knowing what to do, as the shots were ringing out. If they were too scared to go in then why did they not immediately call in a platoon of fully armed Vandoos infantry soldiers? I’m sure they would have gone in and got that prick before he managed to kill 14. Oh yeah, now the police have all the toys and TAC units to deal with these situations. Well beat cop and your .38 is what you signed up for back then. So because of that, we the honest law obeying citizeneery have to pay the price by loosing more of our freedoms, and you the honest tax paying citizen have to pay the price in the form of wasteful spending of your tax dollars for a BS ##### fix law. And I have to listen to Wendy Cuiker try to blow the whole thing out of proportion.

Virginia Tech. If only one person was packing a gun, and had the balls to use it, and killed that prick when his count was 31, then at least ONE life would have been saved. Would that not be worth it? Pricks are going to get guns no matter what stupid gun control you have in place. So what would you rather have? It’s pretty clear to me. But guns are bad right. Guns kill people right. Are you sure it’s not people that kill people. She had nothing, nothing intelligent to say about bill C-68 and why it should be a good thing for Canada. She was just pissed because that prick targeted women. She gave the impression that all gun owners are nothing but red neck, idiot cavemen. When really most of us are just people that are honest and obey the law and just happen to enjoy shooting as a hobby. She did not present one logical argument as to how C-68 and gun control in general will stop criminals from acquiring guns. I still remember one stupid argument she liked to use back then, the one about how she could not understand why the gun community is upset about registering their long guns, when they have to register their cars? Well she must think she is intelligent by saying something like that. Because it’s clear that she must think most of us are so stupid for not seeing the connection. Problem is most of us did and do see the connection. Once the guns are registered, it’s easier to confiscate them. We already had a good system of gun control in effect at the time. Hey Wendy, I have an open question for you. How come that young prick here in Edmonton last year had an unregistered .45 cal, you know the one he used to shoot and kill that poor young girl. And how come dicks with unregistered handguns are killing innocent bystanders on Toronto’s streets a while back. What happened Wendy? How come a billion of our tax dollars and C-68 did not stop that? What about the few Canadian School shootings post C-68? Come on your an intelligent, brilliant debater, I challenge you to respond with something, something other than trying to paint the gun community as sub human back woods hicks. Come on Ryerson:puke: Your kind are so out of touch with reality it's amazing,
