MAPLE LEAF INTERNATIONAL MUZZLE LOADING ASSOCIATION and the Canadian International Muzzle Loading Team

We are looking for new members to join the association and to compete on the Canadian Team.
We are seeking people who are interested in learning about muzzle loading and who have a competitive spirit. Both history buffs and competitive target shooters are members of the association and have a great time!

Looking beyond the smoke and for those unfamiliar with muzzle loading, precision shooting may not be the first image that comes to mind when thinking of firearms designed in the 18th and 19th century. Make no mistake though; these firearms are capable of remarkable accuracy.

What is precision black powder shooting?
Events are held at 25 m and 50 m for pistol, 50 m for musket, and 50 m and 100 m for rifle. In addition, there are Down The Line (DTL) clay pigeon shooting events. Competitions are held in two classes, one for original firearms and a second for reproduction firearms; 'O' and 'R' respectively.

Canadian International Muzzle Loading Team
The Canadian Team is selected annually through a qualification process. The World Muzzle Loading Championships, held since 1972, is the highest level of target shooting with muzzle loading arms. Firearms used range from Japanese matchlock muskets and flintlock arms of the American Revolution, to percussion rifles and pistols of the Civil War era. In 2014, there were just under 400 competitors, representing over 25 countries.

Coaching and training by certified coaches under the National Coaching Certification Program are available.

Course of fire Thirteen shots are fired, yet only the best ten count. Targets are the same as those used by the ISSF (formerly ISU). Distances vary from 25 m to 100 m, depending on the event and the discipline. Shotgun events are shot at international speed and consist in shooting 25 birds in 45 minutes.

Click the following link for the list of events: http://www.cimlt.com/disciplines.html

Do I need to dress up?
No. We generally follow ISSF rules. Rifles shooters can even wear their shooting jacket and shooting boots.

Are there matches?
Yes. Typically, these matches occur in Barrie, Ontario. In 2015, matches will be held May, June and July (walk-ins welcome, bring your guns). Contact us if you would like an orientation or need an invitation.

You do not need to be a member of the Association to compete.

When you are ready to join, membership fees are only $25, and can usually be paid after your first match or two.

So I want to try this discipline, what should I buy?

Yes, as long as it is safe to use. Whether you have a reproduction firearm, a modern day in-line rifle or an original, you are welcome to come shoot with us and get to know the sport. To win events or earn a spot on the Canadian team, your firearms must comply with the rules, but we can worry about that once you’re enjoying the sport.

Below is some additional information:

Overall, a match for rifle and pistol consists of 13 shots shot in 30min, and the best ten shots are scored. The target is a standard bullseye target. However, unlike like ISSF/ISU shooting, in order score a higher value half of the hole or more must me in the higher scoring ring. This allows different calibers to shoot against each other fairly. For example in the percussion pistol event .36 to .45 round lead are quite common.

What type of events are people more interested in shooting (rifle, pistol, shotgun - trap)?

As a pistol shooter, I'm drawn to the pistol events, but there is something about wanting people shoot trap with a percussion or flintlock shotgun that really impresses me.

Having shot a couple of these matches, both pistol and rifle, I can say they are quite addictive. It's not as easy as one might think, achieving ISSF-level accuracy with equipment designed a century or two ago. There is a tremendous satisfaction that comes from completing a 13-shot match with time to spare and scoping your target to find a few sweet 10's on the paper. The camaraderie that comes along with the sport is also a terrific reason to get involved.

Now for the big question... Who's up for a pistol match in the Ottawa area?

Has your organisation ever considered some sort of off site competition, Brian? For example, how about I shoot my targets at home, or at an approved club, with knowledgeable observer. I am sensing some interest here, me for one, and I would seriously consider travelling to Barrie for a match, but once a month, all summer is more than I can manage.

Dear fellow Muzzle loader shooters,
It has been awhile since my last communication but, be re-assure I have not given up on the concept of the national team. i have received some targets from
shooter across the country and have responded back to them.

On Friday July 10, Saturday July 11 and Sunday July 12, 2015, trials are been held in Barrie Ontario for the INTERNATIONAL MUZZLE LOADING TEAM.

In 2016 Hungry is hosting the next worlds Muzzle Loading Championships. It usually takes a week to shoot to complete program.

if you are interested in trying obtaining a berth on the team may I suggest the following links.

1. go to MLAIC web site,
2. from there click on competition.
This will give you an idea of the firearms that are used in each event, as will as the team events.
You will see the events cover rifle, shotgun ,musket, pistol and revolver.

The rules are very plain and were set over the years by those you took the time to put together this championship.

In each event there are two classes, original and reproduction. If you a considering in shooting International and wandering if your firearm qualifies. the rule is very simple, original means exactly that, the gun had to be made back in the 1700 and 1800. That would go for the sights also. The reproduction is a bit different. You must established that the firearm you want to qualify is a true copy of an original. You may be asked to prove that your reproduction firearm is a true copy. You can do this by producing picture of the firearm. In some cases it will not be necessary to show that the firearm is a true reproduction as others have already qualified such a firearm, ie the Parker Hales, Volunteer, and .58 calibre rifles. Also
Pedersoli has many firearms they produce that qualify.

The target used by the worlds organization is the 50 metre U.I.T. Free Pistol Target Stock # 84.

If you require further information plea contact me at the emaill above.

Yours in Safe shooting,

Paul Mullin.
