Canadian-made Valmet variant

LOL, CDN gun owner who has likely never held a real AK, expounding on how awesome the AK is.

I've owned one, for years. They are nothing special.

The AK was designed for use by illiterate, cannon fodder serfs. If thats how you identify then I feel sorry for you. We westerners have much better choices available to us. The ONLY reason you want one is because your govt says you can't have one ... and thats a crappy reason to want something.

You owned one 30+ years ago, which doesn't make you as smart as you think you are. I have a hell of a lot more experience on the AK platform than you do.

The only way the Valmet exception works is for guns they already made. There is no realistic or reasonable way otherwise. AK's aren't so special but in the grand scheme of things they are reasonably accurate and reliable guns. One of my favorites I ever had to lug around was a Galil, a very decent rifle which is also just a modestly improved AK variant. I can see the allure towards a Valmet but they are simply not worth what they go for when I can buy so many other better guns for much less.

to build Valmets in Canada you would need very deep pockets

first you would need to buy the rights to use the Valmet name and be licenced to produce their products

I have not checked to see who currently owns the rights to the name and product line

If you cant hit anything with it because you suck, just say so.

The chance of making new Valmet is zero.

I asked CHATGPT because it can write it better than anyone does:

As of my last update in April 2023, Valmet Corporation (originally Valtion Metallitehtaat, or "State Metal Factories") has undergone significant changes and no longer exists in its original form. The original Valmet was a large, state-owned Finnish company involved in various industries, including metals, machinery, and defense.

The company has gone through numerous transformations, mergers, and spin-offs over the decades. The most notable changes are:

Merger with Rauma Corporation: In the 1990s, Valmet Corporation merged with Rauma Corporation to form Valmet-Rauma Corporation, which was later renamed Metso.

Metso Split: In 2013, Metso was split into two separate companies: Metso Corporation and Valmet Corporation. The modern Valmet Corporation, a result of this split, focuses on supplying technology and services for the pulp, paper, and energy industries. This version of Valmet is quite different from the original Valtion Metallitehtaat, as it no longer involves defense or farm machinery.

Defence and Other Divisions: The defense-related aspects of the original Valmet, including the production of firearms and military equipment, were divested and became part of other entities. SAKO, for example, became a separate entity focusing on firearms.

As of now, the original Valmet as Valtion Metallitehtaat, with its diverse industrial activities including defense and farm machinery, does not operate. Instead, its legacy continues through various successor companies and divisions, each focusing on different industrial sectors.

good luck with trying to purchase the right to use the name of a industrial tech company to make guns - unless you have the money to buy the entire company

Anyone that pooh poohs a Valmet most likely have never owned or shot one. My M88 hunter in 556 is extremely accurate. Sorry all you Garand Thumb (who is kind of a goof) AR guys think so poorly of AK's. Check out https://www.youtube.com/@BrandonHerrera and listen to a fun loving AK enthusiast. With Zenitco acccessories and Russian optics the modern day AK is every bit as wonderful as AR's. Canada can only produce fuggly AR wanna be's as look at the krappe that came out of NEA, Kodiak Defence and others of their ilk. Pathetic.

If they don't even use the name anymore and appear to have zero intention of building small arms under that name ever again, the chance is greater that they would sell the rights to the name

It doesn't work that way. From a corporate perspective the reputation risk associated with lending the right of a company name for peanuts that a small canadian firearms manufacturing can offer is not even worth the 5 minutes to read the email in the C-suite.

A big company lends its name and the product turns out to be sub-par, that is bad for the company.

There is zero demand for that name outside of Canada.

80% ak receivers and parts kits from older gentlemen who want to get their money out of a safe queen rather than dewatting it and putting it up for 1750. Hurts my soul to see deactivated aks and mg42s

They are just product improved AK's. That design has been left behind by history and better technology. The only people who want AK's, only want them because the govt says they can't have them. That is not a good reason to want something.

Sure there would be a rash of people buying because they think they want an AK. Then quickly people would figure out just how crappy they are and the demand would dry up. Why pay big bucks for an AK, when a Type 81 would be WAY cheaper and is a better design?

I owned an AK back when they were non-restricted. There is NOTHING special about an AK and I don't miss it for a second. I even had a T81 for a bit and it also went on to another owner because there are much better options available to us.

Except that doesn't matter at all. Every new thing is better than the last, but I still want Remington 8/81, FN49s, FALs (especially that sick brazillian .223 conversion), and all the other cool stuff we cannot have. I'd want a Chauchat if we could have them.
