Hi guys (gals),

As per the above thread title, would anyone have an idea as to how these mags are restricted to 5 rounds? There seems to be two kinds available from Tapco for the canadian market, one with a typical pin visable externally, and one that is restricted internally - this question focuses on the ones restricted internally. Anyone know definitively?

Thanks.

I'm sure I'm not the only one curious here..... I just emailed Tapco directly. Who thinks they're going to share their secret with me (us).

I give it a 55% chance.

Aren't they lanced if they're not pinned? Seems like it would be more effort than it could be worth on their part to do some fancy internal nonsense

Care to elaborate on the above? What exactly does lanced mean?

I know they aren't "pinned" becuase theres no rivit in the side of the magazine.

The 20/5 round mag is advertised on the Tapco site for the Canadian market. Their p/n is MAG6605 BLACK, there is no color choices. If you google the p/n most of the results come up to the old 5 round zytel mags that Tapco does not sell anymore.

They use a long plastic piece up from the mag base to stop the follower. I can take a pic if it matters.

Would you mind taking a pic and posting it within the forum, or alternatively sending it over via email at mhowarth845@gmail.com?

Thank-you for the offer!

I have always thought that the magazine had to be permanently secured to only hold 5 rounds? Like a rivet, in the CZ 858 mags for example, not restricted like a shotgun is, with just a removeable plug?

It is, you must drill it to get the base off.

... Not entirely true.

The Tapco mags can be dissasembled rather easily for cleaning and maintenance should you like to play rough with your SKS.

I'm not advising you follow this method as you may break your Mag, but this is what i've done.

1- Down at the bottem of the mag there are two metal flaps that wrap up and around a plastic lip at the bottem. Take a pointed pick (something like an ice pick) and press it down inbetween the outmost part of the lip, and the vertical part of the flap - effectively what you'll do is compress the plastice part inward
2-after jamming the pick down side of it (you may have to use a hammer to get it in) take another flat head screw driver and insert it into the mag onto of the steel bottom plate. twist the screw driver and the side with the pick jammed into it should pop open.
3- once the one side is open, simply work the bottom plate back and forth and the other side will come off as well.

They are very tough glass filled nylon Mags - you can bend them and they wont break.

Once the mag is opened, just clean all the crud out, make sure the follower channel is clean, spay a little oil on the follower spring, and re assemble.

re-assembly is super easy, the bottom plate will slide on, and snap into place (you'll see what i mean when you get to this point).

I hope this is helpful for some of you!
