Canadian non resident hunting NFLD???

I cannot open the link that sunray provided, but I think there is one part of his response that needs to be clarified. As of two years ago, a non-resident Canadian could NOT hunt with a "licenced guide." They could ONLY hunt with a licenced OUTFITTER. There is a significant difference, as there are lots of folks who have guide licences, but not all that many who are licenced outfitters. This rule may have changed, of course (but I doubt it). So not only do you need to buy the licence through the outfitter as sunray has noted, you need to hunt with them too.

Two years ago when I looked seriously at a Newfoundland moose hunt, the least expensive hunt was in the order of three thousand dollars, not counting travel to and from Nfld, and thre average was tending into the five grand territory. It was also evident that most of the outfitters' business was coming from South of the border. Success rates are fabulous, particularly on the West side of the island and up the great northern peninsula.

Of the outfitters who answered my queries, one in particular struck me as being somebody who would be good to deal with. I do not recall the name of his outfitting business, but his last name was Patey and he was in the area of the central west coast IIRC.

My Bro-in-law has been on a couple of moose hunts there in the last 3-4 years. First one was around $2500 and the second was $2800. His party went 4 moose for 4 hunters first trip and brought home 1450lbs of meat, and 2 moose and 1 bear for 4 hunters second trip (only because two older gents missed.) Don't know the name of the Outfitter.

Thanks chinook - unfortunately, the link for outfitters is "temporarily unavailable." So I did a little google search on Newfoundland moose outfitters and was not disappointed with the number of results. I did find that operation run by Mister Patey, whom I found to be VERY helpful and courteous when I was looking to book a hunt. Although I did not hunt with him, or anybody else on the island (YET!), he seemed to be a very fine fellow. Here is his information:

DARN! This thread has me thinking about going to Newfoundland again, and I am trying to pay off a hunt camp, not spend a bunch of coin on a hunt!!!!
