The rifles were originally issued to the Rangers. Yes, the military keeps a list of its weapons with their serial numbers and records when and to whom they are issued.

Why are the rifles being gifted?
1, The department of national defence does not have complete records of the ranger rifle inventory.
2, the cost to continue sourcing parts and replacement rifles.
3, the cost of trying to collect the rifles.

When those Irish Contract rifles hit the market, DND bought 1000+ of them.

They probably still have many of them.

Unfortunately there isn’t any documentation that comes with the rifle and there’s no special identification marks either. There is no way to know if the rifle you’re looking at came from a Ranger or not.

Buyer beware. Don’t pay a premium for a “Ranger Rifle”.

I suppose if you buy it from a Ranger, it's a Ranger rifle. Mind, there is no prohibition on a Ranger who was given his issued No.4 buying another Lee Enfield No.4 and re-selling it, but little incentive if they have to pay market price for a No.4 in original configuration to sell it at market price for a No.4 in original configuration.

The Rangers who were given the rifles were also given paperwork which showed the serial number of the rifle, I believe there were 4 pages in the Donation Agreement. I even have a case for mine.

I didn’t receive any paperwork at all with my rifle. I filled out plenty of forms but never received any paperwork with the rifle. All I got was the rifle and a handshake.

Who knows though, other Rangers from other CRPG’s might have seen something different.

You got a Faz post war N04 Mk II, I'd have wanted that too - some poor fellows had worn out Korean War issue rifles. Nice score, probably the best made LE.

I have 2 Irish contract Ranger rifles. Just wondered if anyone's was keeping track of them.

I have the case, no paperwork. Didn't know there was any. I might just call the seller and see if he's got it.
