During WWII the Cdn Army acquired Reising SMGs. Does anyone know the date and quantity issued?

The Reising SMG's were used for guarding main railway bridges all across America in WW2. They weren't a great combat gun and the US Marines dumped thousands of them in the Pacific and replaced them with Thompson's.
In Canada thompson 1928's and Reising M50's were bought to guard the "Camps" that the Japanese, Italian, German and other European civilan's were sent to in WW2. Many of these guns were given to the local police when the camps were closed. The Thompson Model 1928's were Savage Commercial's....Savage receivers and Colt parts.

Actualy the reising in civillian use was reliable. The problem with the Marines was they would have group cleaning sessions. Parts were dumped on a blanket, the guns were cleaned and then people grabbed parts from the pile and assembled the guns. Reising parts were HAND FITTED. What worked in one gun might not work in another. Plus like the Ross, they didn't like mud.

When I was a recruit, a blanket party didn't mean the same thing.

There were some Venezuelan Reisings sold a few years ago; a couple ended up around here. One has been as reliable as a brick since purchase, the other jammed every single shot. It's amazing what a little time with some very fine grinding compound can do! Once the bolt was re-fitted, the thing went 200 rounds without a bobble.

My biggest problem with the Reising is that it was bought for a specific match (on a Canadian Forces base, mind you) and now the Gummint sez that it is a "terorist weapon", just like the FAL they trained me with, also which I am forbidden to use.

I know that it's really too much to expect LOGIC or MERCY from a modern Government...... but how about just a tiny bit of SANITY? Or is dribbling paranoia the order of the day everywhere except here?

Lookinbg at it in philosophical and historical terms, we had a second chance, courtesy of Bjarni Herjolfsson. Europe was so screwed up that nobody in their right mind wanted to stay there. Bjarni discovered the New World in 985 and, pretty soon, the adventurers were coming here. Then the silly, little, paranoid people who couldn't make it in a free society started to come, and now, the New World is as screwed up as Europe.

And there is no new frontier in sight.

The Montreal Police Dept sold off a bunch of M50's in the late 1970's, marked MPD. They were all commercial blue and had the 20rd magazines. The military magazines were 12 rd. Many of these Montreal Police Guns are in collections, as Maranda Sales sold them to collectors.

I saw one of the Cdn marked Reisings with the C/I\ stamp. Talked to a vet who said his unmobilised militia unit had them c1944.
