canadian rifle builders - long gun

i am considering taking the plunge and having a flinter long rifle made. probably in 40 cal. if only for the reason i have never had a rifle in that calibre.
probably in the pennsylvania or kentucky style. or the dauphin style... or whatever else might appeal to me.

does anyone know of good canadian flinter builders.

there's a guy in BC called taylor supergira (sp?) i am trying to track down, but i know there's others.

you can either PM me, but others might like to know too.

There is a guy in Prescott (?) ON who builds presentation grade blackpowder muskets. He was featured on the local CJOH show "Regional Contact" two or three years ago. Then a month later, I had a chance to handle one of his pieces. Quite unexpectedly. It was clearly handmade with some minor tool marks and finish variations. From the way this builder was bragged up, I expected better.
 
Taylor Sapergia lives in Prince George,started as an apprentice with Don Robinson, of the Fraser River rifles (aka Robinsons) > He now just builds custom rifles.Taylor builds real nice rifles, I had Kentucky of his for a while.
The guy I sold it to, won 1st place with it at our last Rondy.

Or how about Bob Kirk ? Cranbrook.

I think he charges $3000.USD for one like that.

40 cal is a good choice for target shooting,I've heard it's a pretty flat trajectory.
In BC and Wash. State there are more and more clubs having "squirrel shoots", which have to be 40 cal or smaller.So there's another good reason for going 40 cal :)

i have a robinson, so that's how i've heard of Taylor. that is a beauty lanc of yours. what calibre? very nice work and not far from calgary. where do you put the rock on it?? :>)

That's my wife's , one of Bobs early ones, it has silver inlays, swamped Getz barrel, That's a must,if she had to choose between me and her "Kirk", the Kirk would win hands down.:) I learned her well:)
Haven't figured out yet how to keep the rock in :D , it's in 50 cal.

I would personally vote Taylor as one of the best builders in BC. Another builder named Hugh Tonjes of either Kamloops or Pinantan Lake is also extremely good and may be actively building again.

Seen some of hughe's earlier stuff, great builder.

As far as Taylor Sapergia goes, I plan on meeting up with him on the trap field this week, apparantly he is comming up top our rendezvous, and it has been a good 20 odd years since our paths have crossed!:cool:
He also builds great firearms.
Fine hand with either Cap or flint, although I am told he shoots mostly trade guns these days, and primitive bows.

I may even meet up with Mooncoon, don't know if he is up here yet or not!:D

Afraid the diesel prices got me this year plus a bit of guilt about not attending our own rondyvous. I certainly enjoy the Fort Mac shoot, expecially the fort shoot. Hopefully next year I will be feeling rich.

Well not too regularly, that's for sure. This is just to advise that I am officially retired from building on consignment now...only work for myself. I have about a dozen projects that I've been saving for this time in my life, and I shall be getting to them little by little. Thanks to all of those who have been my clients over these past fifty years, and to all those who have commented so favourably on my work. I appreciate your kind words.

Peter Alexander is still about - not sure if he is still building commissions ... but he did just call me about 2 weeks ago looking for maple blanks .. so could be? (couple hours east of Toronto)

There is Nick Skinner out in Nova Scotia.

A guy in Niagra Falls.. but can't seem to remember his name.

Also check with rwnblack on cgn here - not 100% sure what he does, but I got some Hawken parts from him not too long ago
 
Wayne Doucette down Digby way in Western Nova Scotia has an excellent, and well deserved, reputation as a builder. I have had the pleasure of handling a number of his longrifles and consider the styling and execution to be excellent. Wayne and Oskar Kob are best buddies. Perhaps Oskar will jump in with contact info.
 
This would be a great starter/build thread ! I think as things move on in life, that this would be a very enjoyable shooting competition/gathering . And the builds are endless! I really never thought of building a muzzle loader of any kind. I do own a Rossi 50 cal , was also thinking smaller cal , would be better. But building from parts and pieces...well there is something to be said about that.
There is a very nice one on the EE right know, built on a Remington action, with a Boyd stock... very nice indeed!
Please if you or someone starts a build... please post as you go, Very interesting indeed!

I don’t think there is a better gunmaker in Canada, building muzzleloaders, or as a stockmaker.

Because Wayne is doing this as a hobby, he spends usually fall and winter on his workbench.

These custom rifles and guns ARE clearly hand made. That’s why the cost is so high.
Unless you mean that they look “imported from I***a” hand made. Then i get your point. Hand made, Just not well done.

You can pretty much expect to see some tooling marks on nearly any hand made gun - inside the patch box, under the butt plate, lock mortise sometimes in the barrel channel. Basically anywhere they shouldn't be seen.

Originals start to look pretty messy once you start taking parts off em ;)

That being said, I wouldn't expect to pay $3k for a gun with chatter marks up the side of the stock...
