For those of you interested in shooting .22 LR rifles at long distances, we started a Precision Rimfire Series to allow people to get into PRS style competitions with .22lr rifles. The matches are setup exactly like the Precision Rifle Series events with 10-stages shot from varying positions and props - barricades, barrels, tank traps, etc. The targets vary in size from a 1" target on the Know Your Limits Rack to full size IDPA/IPSC torso for long range. Each stage will have between 1-5 steel targets placed between 75-300m, usually clustered in an array of between 20-50m.
There are 2 divisions - Production (rifle MSRP under $500 plus optics MSRP under $500) and Open (unlimited)
We're seeing primarily Savage Mk II, CZ 452/455 and Ruger 10/22 at these events. The Savage Mk IIs are very accurate out of the box with the only mods being done is to put them in an MDT chassis. Ruger 10/22s running open usually will have barrel and trigger upgrade along with a chassis upgrade to a Boyd's, MDT, Magpul or Victor Company Titan. Very interesting events.
Wind is usually the biggest factor or rather not factoring it in enough. We've had guys clean the long distance (267m) stage shooting 10/10 when they've held enough wind and it stayed steady but misreading the wind by 2mph is enough to take you off target. It is a humbling stage for sure but we've put in enough stages to make it about marksmanship also. Solid fundamentals are key along with building a solid shooting position.
There are 6 matches planned this year. 1 in Merritt BC, 1 in Taber Alberta, 2 in Ontario and 2 in Quebec.
The next match is scheduled for April 7 in Owen Sound, Ontario with the next on in Valcartier, Quebec on April 29.
