Canadian Small Arms Used in Afghanistan

I never saw an 870 in Somalia personally. The only shotgun I saw/used there was an old RCAF marked over/under that were originally used for bird control on airfields, I was given one to use while on guard duty one night in a tower when I stayed with Svc Cdo for a couple of days.

The fact that it was marked RCAF at that time tells you how old they were and the state of shotgun use in the CAF at the time. There may have been a few 870 floating around in the other Cdo's but I never saw one during the tour.

I do believe these were Valmet Lion O/U shotguns.
For some strange reason of all places CFB Penhold was chalk full of these shotguns.

The ones we had were fixed full stock, 18" barrel with a 12" mag tube. how stupid is that. Either go with a 12" barrel and standard tube or 18" barrel with extended tube. Either is fine but having a long barrel and a short tube makes no sense.

We had the same ones in MSG for dog control.

Yeandle31, yes that's them.

Brutus, you might be right, I can't remember the make.

The Leo II's that were on loan from the Germans had MG 3's for both the coax and AA MG's. They were neat to fire but were/are more fragile that the C6. I found an extra C6 mount off of a Leo C2 and swapped it out so we could mount that for our AA on my tank.

Me and my loader, C6 on the Leo II

Only shot of the MG3 I can find right now, I'll look for more later.

Shotgun shooting was a thing on RCAF bases. Someone's idea for gunnery training of the Mk I eyeball. There was a skeet layout at the west end of the runways in Moose Jaw. Penhold was a comms node and a leftover BCATP training base.

Just to confirm, as I'm not so armoured inclined, I have a few questions:

1. Are those tanks part of the 20 Leopard 2A6's?
2. If so, did the 2 loaned ARV's have the MG3 on them?
3. How many Canadian Leopard's (not on loan) did Canada have in Afghanistan?

Here are two photos I have of Leopard mounted MG3's (photos taken by Silvia Pecota)

1. Yes, these are the A6 loaners.
2. Yes, in fact the pics you posted are the ARVs.
3. IIRC there were 16 C2's still there. They were still used because initially we didn't have the bras to mount the plows, rollers and ploughs on the Leo 2's. We got the bras around the mid point of my tour (1-09), so about July 09. The Germans never meant for the Leo 2 to mount them ans made no bras. IIRC, ours were made the Navy techs in Halifax.

There was a shuffle done with other tanks brought in (Leo 2 A4M I think) and the C2's removed some time after I left.
