canadian sources for muzzle loader parts

None that didn't source the barrels from the US.

I have been building muzzle loaders for a good number of years now and there is essentially "no" source in Canada for parts, barrels or otherwise.

There is a Green Mountain dealer out in BC (name escapes me now) but I have always been able to get barrels cheaper from the US even with the exchange.

Even with buck in the tank a Green Mountain or Colerain barrel will still come in under 250 bucks Canadian (with a 70 cent buck) putting them (on par) with the previous cost of a Rice barrel when our buck was good.

Maybe try an ad in EE - I like many other hobby builders have a couple barrels laying around - I won't part with mine but you might get lucky and find someone who will have something you can use...

Try John Clark (Clark Industries website) in Ontario. He has sold custom made longrifles rifles and kits for years and apparently is retiring and clearing out all his gun stuff. He might have a few new barrels (Colerain and Green Mtn IIRC) available. A buddy recently bought one of his kits and I was not impressed with the workmanship at all so be so aware if you buy one of the kits.

I believe there were some posts a few days ago which said that muzzle loading barrels were now being considered items that needed a US export license and I think that means they require a Canadian import license. My impression is that the license costs $300 and is good for only one shipment, whether it is one barrel or a dozen. If true, a company would have to import a lot of barrels at one time before the cost of the license per barrel became minor

I just bought a pile of parts including 2 x barrels from Track of the Wolf - no import issues, except the higher price.

There is a difference between the black powder barrels used for muzzle loaders (not restricted) and the ones for black powder cartridge rifles (restricted from export).

Still no issue getting a "round ball barrel" - I have had shipped up as "12L14 steel tube", "rifled black powder barrel" etc, with no issue as recently as a couple months ago.

As noted though, with the buck in the tank the prices are just crazy - glad I ordered an pre-paid for the couple that I recently received. What used to come "to your door" for 200 bucks is now just on 300 bucks. And while Customs never charged me for barrels if the price (converted) was under 200 bucks, they always have for over that, which will now tack on HST/GST plus the service fee.

Doug, I believe that was for replacement cylinders for ML revolvers....

Pretty sure he retired . Out of business now ?

Knew John years ago. I think the last time I was there, a long time ago, he had the remains of a Ferguson rifle in the shop. Came out of the Niagara region.
