Canadian Tire ammo prices

I can't figure these guys out. Some of their ammunition ( at my local store) is quite reasonably priced.
Or at least , competitive with other vendors . In that case I will buy there, because they'r close to me and gas costs money too.
Some prices are completely out to lunch however. Like a third more , than what their competitors sell for.
How can they be soooo wrong sometimes?
The high highs and the low lows remind me of one of my neighbors , who is on medication , and see's a whole team of specialists !
I actually asked the guy at the gun counter there , who sets their prices? , and told him some of them made no sense. He said he didn't know , but he looked guilty !! hahahaha
I would assume those decisions are a more corporate type of thing.
Maybe it's time to test their price matching policy !
 
Guns and ammunition are a store by store thing. Some stores don't carry any at all. My Can. Tire has at least 100 guns on display and full time people on the counter. They actually seem to be reasonably knowledgeable as long as you are talking hunting, but anything else, not so much. Because the stores are independently owned they really usually only carry what's most popular. I usually only buy ammunition if they have one of their specials where you spend $200 and get a $50 gift card At the end of the day you should just be happy they sell ammo at all
 
They used to have good prices on surplus. They were still selling mosins, 7.62x39 and others at rock bottom prices when it seemed like every where's else had increased. The factory new ammo they sell is a different story.

They can have good prices on surplus, same way they may not even carry surplus. Sometimes the prices are not so good. And there are even some times that factory new is decent, depending on their pricing scheme. Which I have never figured out . . .
 
I saw some 223 and shotgun slugs on for 60% off clearance, but a quick check online showed it was only a dollar off the price of online retailers.
 
Eastern Ontario CTC prices are high as are TSC. Better off going to big box store or even LGS in some cases !
 
I think it is essentially "whatever the market will bear" ...... I was in a sporting good store recently and saw a used Norinco M-93 offered for sale at $469.00. I asked the guy behind the counter if I was reading the tag properly .......
 
Been a shooter a lot longer then a Canadian Tire employee. I run a pro shop in Ontario for Canadian tire. Like any franchise there is a corporate mark up on everything. (Hypothetical numbers) If I buy a ten dollar box of ammo from a vender, a corp levee is added. Call it 16%. Now that same box of ammo cost me $11.60 before adding a margin for the store. This situation keeps ammo in a higher price range than a private competitors. Also, some ammo sits on the self due to the caliber it is or the bullet type it is or because of brand preference. Some ammo sits like this on the self and because it was bought at a different dollar value than a new box of ammo it costs less.

I struggle with this all the time. Seeking to get better pricing is a priority.

Give the CT's a little break they are trying. Not all of them are gun people and struggle with what to buy and how much it costs to us shooters in other stores.

Each store has chosen to sell these items. Each store is a privately owned franchise. Help them understand instead of shaming them.

There may come a day when one needs ammo and these folks may have what you need
when you need it.
Small shops usually aren't open on a Sunday.

Store near me doesn't sell guns but does stock some ammo.

I look at it like a convenience store.

If i am going hunting RIGHT NOW and need a few boxes of ammo CT is 2 blocks away. Im totally OK paying a bit more.

If im stocking up for a range day ill shop around.

Is there a way to tell what stores carry firearms without calling or going in? When i get a lot of CT $$ it would be nice to get some new toys.
 
Prices are generally out to lunch for ammo there, but I’m glad that some stores carry ammo and a few even carry guns. I remember the days that almost every hardware store sold guns and ammo and it was normal for people to see them behind the counter and nobody had a fit.
 
Ask any retailer and there is very little mark up on ammo. CTC probably goes with the store formula to set prices resulting in prices considerably higher than small storefronts. It's like everything else, the big boys know what the profit margin is and they're not willing to share. I don't care if it's gas, restaurant food, groceries, guns or dogfood. It applies everywhere.
 
All CT stores in Canada are different, and all have there own owner/operators.

Some sell firearms...others don't.
Some sell reloading equipment/components...others don't.
Some sell small amount of ammo...others sell large amounts.
Some have Pro Staff sales people...others don't.

The CT in my home town, being Rocky Mountain House, Alberta, has a rather large selection of firearms and ammo. They also carry some reloading stuff, but due to limited floor space, most of it is locked up at the back, and you have to ask for availability. Having said that, if they don't have it, they will try an order it for you. The same goes for firearms and ammo.

How many CT in Canada carry high end Weatherby, Kimber, Montana, Fierce, etc firearms. Rocky does. Ammo selection is bar none. I find the prices reasonable. Often they will have sales on ammo mainly do to high inventory. I have personally seen ammo displayed at well below there cost. For example, Federal 28 gauge shotshells on sale for about 10 bucks a box. Some Hornady .338WM ammo at around 40 bucks...and many more. You have to be there at the right time.

2 years ago, they had a sale on their firearms at 35% off. Mostly to get rid of older inventory. And once a year, usually 3rd weekend of August, all firearms are on sale at 15% off. Again, you need to be there. These are not advertised.

Somewhat difficult to judge CT stores across our land, as they are all very different. Just happens that ours is excellent!

Our Ct is similar in some respects and different in others.

We too have a large selection of firearms and ammo. We also have some reloading supplies, also locked up in the back. Now that I read your statement, I wonder about the "lack of floor space" story. Whatever, at least we have it.

But our ammo prices are not good. Everything is overpriced and is NEVER on sale.
 
I take advantage of the gift card promotions and use a CT MasterCard for nearly everything. I get quite a lot of free guns and ammunition these days!
 
In these threads, someone always mentions CT selling surplus firearms - which stores sell these anyway? I've never seen any at the Langley location.

The local Canadian Tire here in Bradford did / does price match the ammo. I have many times come in with a print out of a local shop offering the ammo I wanted ( 223 ) for 5.00 less and they have no issue matching it. I must agree it does cost more, but this location has been good about it. Now if they only would carry 6,5mm creedmoore ammo that would be great!
