Local Canadian tire has a hunting supply section and this past week was their 1 year anniversary sale. They had Mosin Nagant 91/30 on sale for $114.00 and are selling them regular $160.00

I am not to familiar with the Mosin rifles and am just starting to learn what I have here. I couldnt pass it up for that price :D ;)

I also purchased some MFS brand ammunition 203 gr SP for $14.99
and 1 box of Sellier&Bellot 180gr Sp for $22.99

What does anyone think of these? I am gonna try both at the range and see what it likes then I may take it with me once or twice deer hunting this fall for the heck of it.
They had some 185 GR MFS for 11.99 but they were all sold out at this time:(

The rifle is in great shape as far as I am concerned, no marks on the metal to speak of and only minor abrasions here and there over the stock

That looks like a nice rifle. The action might get sticky and hard to manipulate after the first couple shots due to cosmoline embedded in the chamber (esp with lacquered cases), but that's an easy fix if you look it up. The rifle might also shoot high or to the side (many have been sighted in for use with the bayo attached), but otherwise you should get decent accuracy. I like to shoot mine at a gong at 200 yards when I take it out and it would be great for deer within those ranges.

Thanks I just gave it a quick wipe down before I took the pics and still haven't cleaned it really well. I am amazed and how unused the chamber area appears to be and the spring plate in the internal mag appears to have no use marks what so ever.

The bolts work very stiff and notchy, I feel this is more from lack of use than lack of lubrication, cause she is pretty greasy right now. It's no where near as smooth as my LE

Don't worry about the bolt, mine is still sticky after about 100 rounds, I actually have to bash it into place with the heel of my hand from time to time.

but darn! $114!! nice find! you probably should grab 2 or 3 ~ just in case ;)

Mine is still "sticky" since 1906.

Moisin-Nagants have to be run with 4 SOLID motions of the bolt in order for the mechanism to work its best. That goes double for the Magazine: you must close the bolt ALL THE WAY before the Interruptor will release a cartridge. That's the bad part. The good part is that if you do it right, the rifle will NEVER jam on you. Also, when loading the Magazine, it is very possible to push the rounds down too far. Cure for this is simple: work the bolt once, solidly. It will feed.

You got a 1938: a prewar rifle. By all normal indications, you should have a good one.

Nothing wrong with the old MN: .30-06 power + decent accuracy + tough as NAILS.

Do have fun!

I have been hearing alot of talk lately of canadian tires across the country getting back into carrying rifles and more hunting gear just in the past month.
Hopefully one of them near me will have $114 mosins, i would be hard pressed to pass that up.

Gonecountry, which NS store had them? I am in NB and it just might tip me over the edge for a road trip one of these days

They told me 1 guy bought 3 at a time, I bought just one, the wife was there with me :p

LOL,most guys can probably relate to that one!!My wife has some interest in the shooting end of things but I don't think I would get away with buying more than one at a time.I wish our local CTC had Mosin-Nagants in stock at that price,I know where one would be going real fast.

How can you go wrong. A rifle with real WWII provenance for $114?

I can't help but feel the Mosin's are going to be the last great deal for WWII Milsurps. There just isn't much else left!

So I just bought a 91/30 Sniper from Marstar... :D:D:D

Nice Mosin Sir! I love the Mosin, such an awesome rifle and so much history.

I'm waiting real hard for my local Can. Tire to start carrying Milsurps! :D

They now once again are selling shotguns and rifles!

Sometimes I think this country might be getting back on track you know?

For the life of me I cannot recall the book but it had to do with the Spanish civil war.
One of the protagonists is being questioned by the police as a suspected Republican( USSR backed) volunteer. The policeman asked to inspect his hands, palm up.
He's looking for the callus that comes from the force req'd to successfully operate the bolt on the Mosin-Nagant rifle.
They like a firm hand, those M-N's.
Every so often mine will Baulk it ejecting a fired round. It get's a firm smack and out pops the empty case.

Yeah, I'm also interested. If it's within a few hours I'd make the trip to save on shipping.

there in yarmouth, i was looking that them yesterday, i was going to buy one but i had no wheres to put it for the trip back home, they had a few other guns onsale i just can't remember what they had and some nice hunting stuff on sale, i forgot to check if they had any scopes on sale,

Gotta manhandle the Mosin for sure. Finding one that cycles as slick as a Lee Enfield would be like finding a live T-Rex at the local pet store!

Remember:
Your badge of honor with a

AK47: your 5 shot group at 100 yards is inside a 4" circle
AR15: your 5 shot group at 100 yards is all touching
Mosin: your 5 shot group was all cycled without the aid of a 2X4

Hmm. Yarmouth isn't too bad in terms of distance, maybe I'll head out there one day.

Welcome to the Mosin Club. Details on the secret handshake will soon be forthcoming.

Getting a nice pre-war '38 for that price is an extremely good deal! ! ! ! ! Even if it is an Izhevsk model vs the Tula so prized by Mosin snobs.... :D

The big deal is to really do a good job of cleaning out the chamber. There's lots of info on methods for this.

I'd avoid the abrasive paste versions for chamber smoothening for now in favour of simply doing a good job with a hand drill and bore brushes that fit each part of the chamber along with some good solvent. There's time for the more aggresive smoothening up options later on.

If it's like most of ours you'll find that the front sight pin is a little short so the rifle shoots high by about 6 inches at 100 yards. Again there's heaps of options for "fixing" this. One of which is to always shoot with the bayonet in place.... sort of gives a whole new meaning to "Coupe de Grace" for hunting Bambis.... :D

There is also heaps of information out there on improving the trigger pull and just about any other topic.

Blista77 is right thats where they are.

They had seven as of yesterday morning I was told. But sale is over and price is back to $160 as far as I know, The 3 I looked at where all in as good of condition as this one.

I would call ahead before making a long trip.

Also they had what was supposed to be a sniper but I dont know it it was a real sniper or just one replica built to sell but it was nice and they wanted $619  I like $114 better and I should have bought 2 the more I think about it. LOL

They also have a SVT 40 for around 300 I think  cant remember exact price. and have a couple vz58 in .223 but they are way high like 800 something :ar15:
