Today was in my new Canadian Tire.. which now sells firearms. They had some some SKS..BBQ paint and sanded down stocks..seemed like an oil based finish, for $279. I am in BC so add 12%.. a little steep I think.

They are on sale at Cabela's for 200$ right now with free shipping. Total came to 230$ with tax for me. Was nervous to order online but got a 1950 Tula refurb all matching. The barrels weren't chromed that year bit the rifling is good and after a few rounds through it has some shine.

Is it safe to assume that the BBQ painted SKS'S are the bottom of the barrel refurbs.. why else would they cover them up with paint.
Not really, my thoughts are that when refurbing, certain factories were tasked with trying out new parkerizing type coatings, I have a few different "parked" sks some I like and some not so much, but they are all tough! I guess like most countries/manufacturers, in the 60's they were coming up with more durable coatings. The blued ones still look the best to me and of course for collecting, but as for the bottom of the barrel,,, no,,, my refurbs with parkerizing have great internal parts and are as tight and sometimes tighter than the blued copies, the bores of mine so far are really good, look new! Ymmv!

Thanks for the insight.. I am down to owning 2 sks at this point.. both i consider too collectable to shoot, and want to get a real good shooter.

Look for a good bore and tight in the stock along with the trigger, that seems to be a good indicator of a reasonable shooter, I will be adding a peep sight of some sort to my main shooter, mostly because of my aging eyes!

CT in Greenwood, NS, had them for 179$ for hardwood and 189$ laminated when I got there in summer of 2015. When I left in April 2016, the laminated ones were 199$. All blued refurbed, no bbq paint.

They eveb had one in a custom stock worth 359$
