Canadian values- M1941 Portuguese K98.

The range down there is crazy. It can be anywhere from 500-3000. Its all condition. They even have PORT RC, then all the way up to full match, sling and bayo mint. One went on GB for like 3500 even. But a lot more cash laden collectors down there.
There's a lot of threads about port values over at gunboards.

That's crazy.

I guess I won't bother trying to find a nice one for a reasonable price then.

They are around you just have to look for them. One guy said you shouldn't promote CGN its just going to educate the person viewing the site, and cost you more the next time you buy something. The serial number block of my Portuguese 1941, K98 is H33XX.

I sold a Port k98 this past year, wood was banged up but solid, metal and bore was excellent, no bayonet, but has a sling, for $1300.
Two years ago, I parted with an absolute gem, in every conceivable way, minus sling and bayonet for $2000.
Guess what? The money is gone, and so are the Ports....would never sell one again:)

Thanks to all that have responded to this post.
There seems to be various ideas of what these rifles are worth today.

Before I bought this rifle I was looking for a matching German K98k that had WWII history, well marked, and in decent condition.
I could not find one.

I eventually tripped over this Port 41,….. John St-Amour at Marstar had suggested this to me years earlier.....I said no.

I like clear markings on the stock and the gun, the 41 Port fits into that category, although the battle history might not be there.

There seems to be a substantial demand for matching K98s with little supply.
When found in good condition they are expensive.

I can relate to "joe n's" comments above after he sold two of his 41 Port rifles, one for $2,000 and the other for less.

“I have sent the money and the guns are gone.....I would not do it again.”

I guess timing is everything.....when you are ready to sell.....you have to be ready to sell for whatever the market will permit.

I currently have a similar situation where a buyer is prepared to pay more for one of my guns than it is probably worth.

I know I will never replace it....part of the dilemma of being a collector…..and eventually a seller.

I'll keep looking, but in a passive sense.

Meanwhile, I like your rifle. That is the one you sold and then got back years later, no?

I would have to agree they are one of the finest war time Mausers available. Especially for the guys who were picking them up in mint condition when they were first imported here.

Why did my Dad have to like golf so damn much?

I would have rather he'd been a gun collector that took me to the range on a weekly basis (at the very least.)

Don't give up on it. You may come across someone who wants to sell theirs and doesn't know what they have. It's not unethical to simply pay the asking price.

I've been fortunate enough to pick up a few nice rifles for reasonable prices, even when the seller could have gotten more.

One nice gent who sold me my 1950 Long Branch No. 4 Mk1* noticed it was close to my birthday when he was inspecting my PAL. He smiled and handed it back while wishing me a "Happy Birthday!" It was, I was elated to find an Enfield in such good condition. Like my 1935 Brazilian Mauser, all it really needed was a good cleaning and some oil.

As it was, he was responding to a WTB ad I had put in the Buy&Sell. He could have gotten a few hundred dollars more for it, but I think he was just glad that a rifle he had no use for was going to a good home. He said a neighbour gave it to him for free, so he didn't do too bad.

Here's a list of the rifles I keep an eye out for in mint, or at least, very good condition.

M1935 Brazilian or Chilean Short Rifle in 7x57mm

M1941 Portuguese Contract K98k in 7.92x57mm

Czech post-war K98k in 7.92x57mm

M1950 FN Mauser in .30-06

No.4 Mk2 Fazakerley in .303 British (with blonde beech stock)

I remember seeing a Fazakerley still in the wrap at a gunstore in Kelowna. I scoffed when the owner told me the price, I think he wanted $200 or $250 for it. At that time, full wood No.4 Mk1's were going for about $100 in decent condition.

If only I had known then what I was passing up...

I thought you only liked K31's?

:D

My father, like most Portuguese of his and later generations, carried one for four years along with a Walther P38 in Angola and Mozambique. I know he actually received a commendation for his use of the P38 in an "altercation". It's in his Military book which I have, and collaborated by numerous sources. Eventually the Mausers were replaced with G3s. There is a lot of family history involved.
