Ok, I might be a bit behind the times here on this rifle but hear me out.
I saw the Ruger M77 Gunsite Scout rifle on Guns and Ammo TV recently and I thought it was pretty cool and I was considering buying one, our watered down Canadian version without the flash hider and longer barrel is so lame and boring in comparison that it doesn't interest me at all.
I read the thread in one of the dealers section and people are speculating that the reason that there is no flash hider is that the US government won't allow anything with a flash hider to be exported; it sure seems that there at loads of US made AR15's and other “black rifles” for sale in Canada with Flash hiders.
Also, why is the barrel longer, there are no stupid laws or rules in either country that will prevent the sale or export of a 16.5" long barreled fixed stock bolt action rifle.
There have been posts that the Gunsite crest is not on the stock, well why would it be; the rifle is an abortion of their original rifle in which they had a lot of input towards it’s final design.
In my opinion, now it’s just another short barreled 308; you might as well buy a Stevens 200 for that matter and use the $500 difference in price to buy ammo.
Rant over!

I've got the Cdn. version and I'm impressed. Who needs a flash hider anyways?
Perhaps a mall ninja or a wannabe Gunsite groupie.
I'll take the stainless over blued anyday.
The rifle as is, is a handy piece for a multitude of uses.

Why even make those changes for the Canadian market?
Seems so tripe as the original variant was go-to-go as is.
Might as well just get a Frontier or a Remington Model 7.

What has stomach lining got to do with this?

I think the changes were to comply with US state dept export regs.

Mine is fine. I actually like the longer barrel and no flash hider. I'm also glad that it doesn't have the gunsite logo on the stock. About the only thing I plan to change is to have it cerakoted, as I'm not that big a fan of the stainless look.

I've also got to pick up some 5rd mags, as the gigantic 10rd have a tendency to catch on stuff - primarily my jacket.

A flash hider is just window dressing. A brake would have some utility. 16 vs 18 inch barrel is no big deal. A laser logo on the stock? How kewl! Stainless can be useful, flavour of the month, whatever. Does it really matter?
Decent little carbine either way.

I was at the Buffalo Gun Center a few weeks back and looked at one of these models. The clerk who worked there told me that the store would make the necessary changes to the gun in order to export it. It is the American government that requires the changes, not the Canadian one. By the way, I like the flash hider and the black finish.

With a statement like that you must be a Fudd, actually I fall into all categories pretty much just a general all around gun nut.

If you read the Ruger web page description it says that the flash hider is removable for the fitting of most standard 30 cal muzzle accessories, a brake perhaps? You are paying extra for the "Gunsite" rifle but not getting all of what you paid for whether you care if it is there or not.

Hey there SB found this description for ya!

Fudd

Slang term for a "casual" gun owner; eg; a person who typically only owns guns for hunting or shotgun sports and does not truly believe in the true premise of the second amendment. These people also generally treat owners/users of so called "non sporting" firearms like handguns or semiautomatic rifles with unwarranted scorn or contempt.

"See sonny, all those pistols in that cabinet... all thems is good for is killin people." -Example of ignorant comment from a fudd at a local gun shop

If you only knew me you wouldn't label "FUDD" so freely. LOL!!

What muzzle accessories are there other than a brake or a flash hider? I'm pretty sure I wouldn't want a brake on that rifle. .308 isn't punishing to shoot and that rifle is no superlightweight, anyway.

I like the Canadian version better; the flash hider is a gimmick on this rifle, and the matte stainless barrel is a bonus as far as I'm concerned. If you don't like the look then have it Cerakoted. It would be nice if it had the Gunsite laser engraving but it's certainly not a deal breaker. I'm going to buy one for sure.

I'm also on the scout rifle forum. Let me tell you, there are tonnes of yanks on there who are green with envy about our version. Our longer barrel does hardly anything in terms of muzzle velocity as 308 is insensitive to barrel length but what it does grant us is an extra 2" of sight radius. The overall length of the two versions are actually about the same. Ours is more practical by far and those in the know recognize that.
