I was able to sneak out to the range this afternoon to take out the TP9SA pistol by Century Arms. (Courtesy of iRunGuns)

Synopsis... AWESOME

I went with 250 rounds of Federal American Eagle 115gr FMJ and Remington 115gr FMJ. I got rained out after 200 rounds of American Eagle.

So my observations in no particular order.

This pistol points naturally and when it actually comes time to stare down the sight and pull the trigger it is so nice. I love the sights on this pistol.

This is my first 10 rounds fired.

Like I've said in other posts I'm no expert when it comes to pistols and my aim is lacking but I was pretty happy with that group considering I'd never shot the pistol before.

This was the second round of shots.

Things tightened up a little bit and this is what the groups ended up looking like for the majority of the targets. I'd like to go back again and give it another go and see if I can improve things a bit.

A couple notes about the actual pistol. Mine likes to throw the first piece of brass from each mag back in my face. I had a few bouncing off my glasses and hat. Don't know why. Don't really care. just an observation.

A bright shining star for this pistol is the trigger. It is very crisp and is light. It's very nice.

On a superficial note.

This thing gets dirty!

IMAG2566.jpg

I've never shot American Eagle 9mm before so I don't know if its known to be dirty or not. Obviously the pistol being tan lends itself to getting dirty quite easily.

Another thing I noted is that my hands were getting dirty just from firing.

You can see that where my LH thumb sits (I'm right handed so on the left of the slide) powder and gasses are escaping underneath the slide by the slide release. I've never experienced this with my other pistols so I don't know if this is common or not.

I was also getting ALOT of black on the ejected brass. More so than on my other pistols.

You can also see the powder marks on the RH side of the back of the barrel.

In the end I put 200 rounds of American Eagle through and loved it.

It did not have a single hiccup. I even picked up a couple pieces of dud ammo off the ground and tried them and they fired as well.

There were no jams, no misfeeds, no FTF's, FTE's.

The only thing I noticed is at the end of the 200 rounds the slide wouldn't automatically hold open when I racked it with the mag in. Or rather it would lock open intermittently.

My final conclusions is that I really like this pistol. It is reliable, looks awesome, shoots great and price was incredible.

Side note: Never used the decocker :p After confirming that this is SA only the decocker is indeed useless.

I definitely would like to get more mags for this in the future. Haven't seen any around though. Perhaps iRunGuns can chime in with mags or a source.

Thanks for reading. Now time to clean.

Thanks for the report. Excellent write up and photography, too. I was thinking hard about getting one but ended up getting a SIG P320 (or at least I think I did...the site sponsor I bought it from has not been able to give me a status update for two weeks...but that's a story for another day). I only became aware of this model of Canik recently--it looks very appealing. Your accuracy is not bad at all for the first time out, either.

A couple of things--I would never pick up rounds off the ground to try in my pistol. They could be someone's overcharged handloads or who knows what. The blackened brass is a bit of a concern, especially if it's worse with this pistol compared with the same ammo in your others. Also, the failure to,lock back also concerns me--was it with both magazines? Hopefully a good cleaning will help there.

Good job!

Good job!

It failed to lock back with one mag only and that was at the end when I was packing up.

As for the off the ground ammo I figured I would get some concern over that. It was steel cased Barnaul/LCW so I wasn't worried about pressures.

I've cleaned her all up for the most part. The entire area directly under the chamber was coated in powder. I just didsome q tip swabs tto tidy up. I'll shoot her again tonight and then give it a through spray down with solvents. I've got some Centaurs reloade ammo coming iin today so I'll feed her some of that.

The amount of gas/powder residue escaping would get me wondering if that might be a sign of issues with fit or assembly.

Everything feels pretty well fit when you use the pistol. Like I said above the innards were coated in black after shooting the American Eagle ammo. I honestly don't know if the insides are excessively dirt because I've never been able to see the powder so clearly on my black guns.

She runs dirty but great.

Thanks for the great write up and review! Looking forward to further updates, especially regarding the excessive gas/powder residue issue. Hopefully there's a way to remedy that.

If only Thunder Bay weren't a good 15+ hours away I'd gladly donate some s&b/cci blazer to the cause. Hopefully I get a hold of a tan TP9SA soon and will report back if I have similar results.

If possible .. get a box of Blazer or S&B and see if you get the same result.

Yes a good report. I was going to suggest S&B ammo too. I have some issues with it over bits from the primer (I think) getting into my striker channel on a DB9FS striker-fired 9mm, but I was quite impressed with how clean the S&B appeared to burn (anyone know what powder they use?). I was looking at the P120 stainless model myself, but it's on the backburner now, lol.

I think you guys are worrying about nothing. So, you've got dirty ammo, big deal. Try others and if you don't already, start rolling your own. To insinuate there's something wrong with the pistol is premature at best. If it goes, "BANG!", when you fire it and there's no apparent or obvious signs of malfunction, then you've clearly got an ammo issue if you find the amount of residue objectionable.

I personally don't think anything is wrong with the gun but am mostly curious to know if it is indeed the ammo being dirtier than usual or if it's perhaps part of the way it was designed that's causing excess residue to get on the OPs slide/hands. Either way, I'm still getting one :)

Perhaps this is not scientific - what is the diameter of the round compared to the 1F brass? Try measuring at 2mm increments from the case mouth.

Perhaps they have loose chambers?

I think the gun is fine. It goes bang and shoots straight. But it seems to be dirty compared to my other ones. Will it stop me from using it? Hell nawww. Its my favorite now.

Unfortunately my local shops don't have anything other than Remington, American Eagle in stock. I'm going to try Remington tonight. I should also have some Centaure commercially reloaded ammo to feed it.

Once I've done so I'll let everyone know.

I'll also measured the once fired and see how it is this evening.

I had mine out, points great, no issues. I am a lefty so I did reverse the mag release, it took some time to get the spring back in. I also founds it fits nicely in my M&P 40 Safariland holster #568.

Awesome trigger, with a nice reset for this price point.

The tan does get dirty but that means you are having fun!

I didn't mean to dis your new toy and I'm glad you are having fun with it (always great to get a new gun). It's just that I've never had black on my hands after shooting a semi automatic. If everyone else thinks its normal I bow to greater experience and stand corrected.

I shoot the Centaure quite a bit and it seems very clean to me so that may make the difference.

So turns out CANPAR sucks ass and decided not to deliver my ammo. So I scrambled and came up with some Barnaul and a box of Remington. I'm mid shoot right now and so far I'm getting powdered up again.

I'm also getting powder down through the trigger mechanism.

This thing shoots great but leaks powder and crap like a sieve.

Will measure brass later tonight.

Headed home from the range. Consensus is that the TP9 likes Remington 115gr ammo much more than American Eagle or Barnaul. It ran much cleaner with both Rem and Barnaul than AE that's for sure. Of the two Rem was far more accurate.

I had a few guys try it out while I was there and they all liked it. All shot it well.

Looking forward to giving this thing a good soaking in solvent to clean it right up then get back out.
