I was wondering if I can safely leave canned goods (beans, veggies, soup, meat) in sub-zero temperatures for my winter visits without cans splitting in the cold. I wouldn't leave canned beverages but foods might not expand as much and might be canned with a bit of head room. Does anyone have thoughts or experience to share?

Store stuff you want un-frozen in an insulated cooler. Thats what i do. Seems to keep stuff from freezing in the cold. But then again I never go in anything below -5 or so. Hope this helps. Cheers.

Edit: I think I misinterpreted the OPs question. Didn't realize he wanted to leave it at camp while he was away, just thought be meant short term...

Myself I would never eat anything that was left in the camp and frozen as I would be afraid of the seal being broken and bacteria entering the can. If you do just remember the old sayings " the nose knows" and "when in doubt, throw it out".

When my inlaws moved from Toronto to Edmonton 10 years ago, my mother-in-law packed up all her canned goods and put them on the truck. It was Jan. when they moved and needless to say most of the cans frozed and the tops and bottoms bulged out, with many of them leaking. Needless to say we had to throw almost all of it out. If it freezes you can most likely kiss it good-bye.

I have had cans of tuna and fruit and what not in my truck in the winter for lunchs. Had them roll under the seat and get lost. I pulled out 3 cansof tuna and a can of fruit this spring that was frozen, down to -50 and I opened it up and it was fine. The can of fruit was bulged but not broken.
