Does anyone here shoot black powder cannon? I got a few of them ranging from 1/2" to 3".... and boy do they roarrrrr!!.... I am concerned about legal problems and just take them out with trusted buddies who love the roar of a cannon and the smell of black powder... What do we do with them in Kanada?.... Hide them... shoot them... or display them proudly??

I don't think they meet the definition of firearm under Canadian law. They are basically a big bore matchlock which is also not a firearm.

Touch hole fired cannon seem to be treated as antiques, regardless of size. If a percussion lock were fitted, I assume that one would be subject to registration.
So as long as one is fired cautiously, without violating any firearm discharge laws, there shouldn't be a problem. Cautiously might be the operative word. These guns can have considerable range and are discharging serious projectiles. There are safety considerations which are unique to cannon.
It would be worth logging onto www.muzzleloadingforum.com, going to the cannon section, and carefully reading the stickied list of cannon mishaps. It makes for truly frightening reading.

Dave.....Where you from? In Alberta, a group of us gets together every fall and have a shoot.
PM if you want.

I am itching to build one t shoot golf balls. I am going to source some hydraulic cylinders with 1 3/4" bore.
princess auto seems to be a good source for them but heavy equipment scrap yards is even better :D

I've always wondered about hydraulic cylinders. They are quality steel, of course, nicely honed internally. But they are not particularly heavy walled, and would require a breech to be fitted. Threading would reduce the wall thickness further. If one were making a drop fired mortar, I could see hydraulic tube being a reasonable choice. Just don't know about using one for a ml cannon. If I were going to use a tubing product, I think I would be inclined to use heavy walled mechanical tubing.
SignGuy - you're in Ottawa - if you get a chance, drop by the Metal Supermarket over on the east side of town. There will likely be pieces of heavy wall tube on the odds and ends rack that will stir your imagination. Heavy enough material to really thread for a breech, and to mount trunnions, as well as to turn to an attractive contour. Many years ago I made a mortar fron what I understand was a track tensionner from a bulldozer. Scrounged it from a dump, already had a small can sized bore in it. Drilled a reduced diameter powder chamber. Made a trunnion and a block mount. Piece was about 4" diameter, a foot long. It would launch a can about 200 yds, 8 seconds in the air. A good scrap yard is worth checking out.

I watched a recent movie on TV (Bury my heart at wounded knee.)

The US army pounded the piss outa sitting bull with small Canons.

They were quite neat and i would like to make one. They looked like they fired cases shells tho?
I was surprised how lightly built the breach blocks or Plates that slid shut were.

Anyone know what them canons were ? where i could read up on them.

Nessy357,
your video link is from Heffley Creek, I noticed.
I was talking to someone yesterday (Ian M.) that mentioned Heffley Creek having a big shoot at the end of Aug. He said it is the last 2 weekends, and the week inbetween.
Do you get many cannons showing up? I may have to make a trip up there.
