Cannon "Anyone?

Probably the biggest shoot in Canada. 10 days of shooting, 2 or 3 events every day.Approx. a dozen cannons on the Fri ? still waing for the flyer to come out.
We have shooters from the USA, Germany, Sask. lots of Albertans also.
Groups or clubs take on doing the different shoots so as not just one club is organising the entire event.
I'll start a thread with pics of some of the events, council fires etc.
Last year one of the shoots had 139 shooters.

i have a 1/3 scale mountain howitzer which will shoot a golf ball as far as you can see, as well i have a beer can mortar which so far i have gotten to shot as far as 160 yards. great fun!!!

Im wondering if there are any recoil calculators that would work to calcualte recoil on these things? I want to make a sholder fired gun(1.340" bore)... but The projectiles are going to be around 9 0z... if I keep it under 1000fps it should be doable right? Would it be posible to make a projectile similar to a foster type slug in a shot shell stabalize being scaled up this much? What about a preasure calculator?... maybe 1000fps with a 9oz slug isn't reasonalbe... maybe 700 ish is?

I think the recoil would be substantial unless you made the gun 30 or 40 lbs. I occasionally shoot a 14 lb rifle with a 3 oz round ball and a velocity I am guessing around 1100 or 1200 fps; it takes a bit of getting used to. A tremendous shove is probably the best way to describe it. Shooting a ball that is 3 times heavier and almost the same velocity, one might expect 3 times the recoil unless it is absorbed by a heavier gun.
The original elephant guns which shot 3 and 4 oz balls and slugs and 400 grains of powder often approached 20 lbs in weight to control recoil.

Miniature Seacoast Cannon Bore size:(?)

Pretty sweet! Look at some of the proposed expirements:

1. From the Earth to the Moon

We have always loved Jules Verne’s tale of American efforts to reach the moon with a gigantic cannon projectile fired from a 900 foot long cannon. The 20,000 pound aluminum shell was propelled by a fictional charge of guncotton 170 feet long in the 9 foot diameter bore. Our version would be much reduced, of course, and would be smaller than 1/6 scale for obvious reasons. Details have yet to be worked out.

2. Testing a Petard

These wall or reinforced door smashers have always been fascinating to us. I doubt that we will be able to find a three or four hundred pound bronze bell to use, but I doubt that the besiegers of the 14th or 15th century would turn up their noses at an offer of a cast iron mortar and ten pounds of powder. This experiment will probably produce some interesting photos. Watch for this one in about six months.
:D

3. Use of a Ballistic Pendulum

By making and then using this ancient device for measuring recoil energy, and comparing it to actual chronograph results and modern energy calculations we will be doing something not even thought about for a very long time. Results on this one might take about a year to be published.
