It's tac rifle, camping/hiking season, and it's time for the NR once a year cleaning. I have taken my barrel off several times on different occasions without any trouble. However, I can't get my barrel off today, at all, it won't even budge.

I have tried the towel/mallet on the muzzle to relieve tension on the cam, no luck, tried tapping the cam itself hoping the vibration will loosen it, no luck.

Any thoughts?

Once a year, or around that... Yeah. Why would I sell it? The barrel will come off, it's just a matter of taking it to a gun smith, or talking with someone who has had this problem.
No. The OP rod I take out after I remove the barrel. I don't think you can remove the op rod until you remove the barrel Is that supposed to make it easier?

If this were a bearing in a motor etc.. I'd put the assembly in the freezer and then when its cold play a low temp torch (propane or butane) over the housing. Cold part inside = small, hot part outside = large they usually come apart easily. I assume there is some plastic involved here so maybe you could carefully use a heat gun or hair dryer, or just try it cold. The temp change may help.

Sorry. I have not. I assumed the barrel is stuck in some sort of socket on the receiver? Well nevermind then.

I have not unlocked the barrel, that's the problem. I lift the cam pin /w a small ice pick shaped screw driver, and try to turn the cam to "unlock" but it WONT budge, not even a MM. Like I said, I have taken my barrel off numerous times, and have never had a problem.

edit, not worth it.

Haha.. Yeah, tell me about it. I was a little surprised when I went to turn the lock. :)

Not that I can really think. It has been a while since I cleaned it, but that's normal - and doubtful that's the problem for a military firearm.

Yep, safety precautions are always taken, and I think you need it removed anyway, IIRC.
I use a ground down 1/2 allan key.
I'm going to give CamAm I call tomorrow, see what Chris says, maybe he's heard of this problem before. If not i'll take it to pro's. They'll definitely have more patients then I do.

Thanks for the time, TV-PressPass.

Well, I hate to say it, but this is one reason you don't wait a year to clean your rifle.

It's possible a little bit of moisture snuck in there somehow and seized it up.

Correct.
  • The BCG needs to be out.
  • You need to have the pin on the opposite side pushed down.
  • You need something barrel wrench sized that won't slip.

It sounds like you've got it all covered.

I've had to heave pretty hard on mine in the past to get it to budge.

Let me know what Chris says? I'm curious to see what your solution is.

Off topic: which generation of Tavor do you have?

I disagree, Conte. This is a military rifle, made for sub zero - to blazing heat, sand, ect. If a little semi auto fire makes it so you can't detail strip - then something is wrong in the design.

For there to a as big a problem as this, you should notice a difference in performance. Safety not working correctly, FTE/FTF, trigger problems, or in the Tavor's case, a smooth trigger.
Cleaning, or lack there of is NOT the problem. Per year I fire around 2,000 to 4,000 rounds a year, no problems - and it's never been a problem. On the high average, that's like a week training for a solider?
Many times people do more damage to their guns by over cleaning, then just using the firearm.

Anyway, this problem is past internet help. Thanks everyone.

See, that's the part I find odd. I have NEVER had any problem with the lock, it's always went with minimal effort.
I got one of the first Tavors shipped out, all the way back in early '08.
I will definitely send you a PM, TV-PressPass.

i clean my tavor after ever use and it is harder to remove sometimes then others. the first time is supost to be the hardest. but one time after that i thought i might break the allan key be for i got the the f-in thing loose. i was flexing the allan key more then i have ever flexed any other tool without it breaking. i had to use a 6" long wrench as a pry-bar. it worked in the end. hope you break that thing free. its an awsome toy....p.s. please clean it more then once a year just for me lol.ovrec
