I bought a used 18' square stern canoe (fibreglass) to use moose hunting next fall. The river is shallow / rocky and I want to protect the bottom. It needs some work on the keel now and I want to add protective strips while doing this. I've seen white plastic strips added to the keel on freighter canoes.

What is the white plastic product and where can you buy it (in sheets)? (I also want some for runners on the Otter sleigh / fish hut this winter).

How are the protective strips attached to the canoe? I hated to drill and have to seal the bottom.......

I suspect it's probably Ultra High Density Polyethylene. I'm sure there's a caulk/glue for it, but I don't know it offhand. I've used lots of the stuff. It's great. I have always bedded mine in something like 3M-5200 and then bolted it with S.S. bolts. I have a 14 foot welded canoe I built over 15 years ago and used the poly for runners... no tears and is still there. Any plastics shop will be able to tell you about caulk or gluing as a viable alternative. Worse case scenario, it rips off...
