Has anyone had experience with the Canstar 50BMG single shot rifle? I have had problems ejecting fired rounds. American Eagle 660 grains seem to be the most problematic needing quite a slap on the bolt to eject. PMC rounds seem to work better. American Eagle rounds seem to have harder primers. Most duds have been American Eagle. Somewhere along the line someone suggested AE was using lower quality brass that may be causing issues. I would like to hear other peoples experiences. Thank you

I don't have a Canstar, but have 2 other .50s. American Eagle seems to be loaded a bit on the hot side - sticky bolt lift on one of my rifles.

Are you able to handload for the .50? If not, PMC seems milder. Hornady AMAX ammo is also great, but expensive due to the projectile...over $8/round!

Thank you. I should try a box of Hornadys. I must admit $8 / shot is a deterent. I notice your address is Kingston. Do you shoot at the Kingston club?

It appears from other forums here the American Eagle 50 BMG run hot and may contribute to sticky extraction. I have a DA50 and will see if the same problem occurs in it. We have a small club in Godfrey. The Frontenac Club is a great facility.

The extraction problem is a design flaw in the action. There is no cam angles machined into the bolt or the action therefore depriving you of any primary extraction.
The 1st generation DA50s had this same issue.
Coupled with the higher pressures that the XM33 ammo has, I bet you are having a hard time getting the bolt to open after discharge.

The Gen2 upper included an improved camming action according to Canada Ammo, though I agree with Rick in his comment above that there is no primary extraction. I took to lightly lubricating the neck only of the live round before firing...not the body just the neck so as not to increase bolt thrust. This did help. I then went exclusively to handloads not loaded near max and they have been great...

<------ willing to fire and offer opinion. please supply Rifle, Range, and time, I'll be there!!!

Kidding, but you might notice the jealousy in my type....?

Safe shooting friends.

What type of lowers are you using on your your DA50's?

The DA50 upper as originally designed will fit any AR15 lower. We have been manufacturing a NON restricted lowers that were initially used on the Feret and Safety harbor uppers that we modified. We now are modifying the DA50 uppers to fit our lower so as to make the package NR.

I had a spare Windham Weaponry lower kicking around. Good, solid mil-spec lower - Windham is the old Bushmaster plant. Because you have to remove the bolt stop, and change out the trigger, a "dedicated" lower is preferred. Not sure if I would go the polymer lower route with this. So far, no damage or strain apparent at the front lugs or anywhere else on the lower that I can discern.

Happy camper with this configuration so far.

I shot a Feret for years when it was on top of an old Bushmaster lower with no problems to the lower at all.
I DON"T recommend shooting a 50 with an AR lower in a lead sled type device. The 1 I saw sheared off the front of the lower where the TD pins go through and bent the rear TD pin significantly. As long as the rifle can recoil normally i don't see this ever being a concern on any AR lower.

If you ever go over to Silverdale. They have or had a Canstar 50BMG that they would let you shoot for a fee.

I purchased a Windham Weaponary lower but decided to go with the Alberta Tactical non restricted lower. It appears that the Canstar works well with PMC ammunition after further experimentation. Not so with American Eagle.

My DA 50 locked up on the first shot. With extreme force got the case extracted. Was using PMC factory shells. There is a ring around the neck of the cartridge and 1/2 inch of abrasion 1/4 inch from the base of the shell. I have contacted Canada Ammo.
