Can't Decide

I'm looking to get my first .22 and I've narrowed it down to 2 options that my shop has that are reasonably priced.

The two I can't choose between is the Savage Mark II FV and the Marlin 925R. Savage advertises a lot of special features in their guns but from what I hear marlin is a well respected firearm manufacturer.

Anyone know anything that should make this decision easier?
 
i have shot both savages and marlins. You are right to say that they both are excellent rifles. I shoot a lot of gophers and have used my 1940 Marlin 81 in a majority of the shoots ( old habits ). The Savage is very accurate out of the box and I use it as a long range rifle( 200 yards) . The accutrigger is great to have and adds to your accuracy I feel. Many may feel that the Savage is the way to go but either way you choose you will be very satisfied with the product. Personally for a first gun, I would have to choose a Savage.
 
flip a coin, i dont think you could go wrong with either. my wife's got an older marlin 880sq, and i have a marlin 17hmr(stainless laminate bull barrel), both shoot great.
i bought a savage cub for the grandkid's, and just love it. accu trigger's kinda neat.
ps: the marlin's have shot thousand's of gopher's, and we have never had any problem's.
 
I have a Mossberg 144LSB heavy barrel target rifle and it is a tack driver at 100 yards. Again it is a way different gun than the plinkster. I also have 3 model 151 Mossberg semis that do a real decent job with the gophers too. i know little about the newer stuff but the older rifles have a quality about them.


What it really comes down to is what you want out of the rifle. For target punching and some field work (gophers) when you are semi-stationary...then the heavy barrel...when doing a lot of walking and short range shooting...then the lighter barrel. I shoot both heavy and regular weight barrels ( when doing field duty) and with practice they both can be very pleasing in the results department.

Welcome to the club and you soon will discover that "one is never enough"...lol...lol.
 
I think I'm gonna go with the Savage Mark II. I want the FSS model with the high luster barrel rather than the blued barrell of the Savage Mark II FV. Does anyone know of a reputable online dealer that sells Savages?? My dealer only has the FSS and he is at 200 above US dollar MSRP. I want this gun but I know its not worth 500 bucks.
 
i've owned both and only kept the Marlin. the only advantage savage has is the accutrigger, but Marlins advantage is over 100 years of riflemaking. i absolutely love my Marlin 925. the only things i've done to it is remove some wood under the barrel to float it, and i replaced the trigger spring with a paper-mate pen spring. believe it or not this trick brought my trigger pull weight down to just under 2#, no creep, better than the accutrigger. Buy the Marlin and don't look back!

P.S. forget about the plinkster. it's cheap for a reason.
 
I love my Savage. Can't go wrong with either though. I've shot my uncles Marlin 925 and it is very nice but not nearly as nice of a trigger as the accutrigger.
