I am loading for my 9mm and have always used 231 and I am almost out so I figered I would try tightgroup but it will not meter  I am useing a hornady AP and 231 will meter +/- .1 no problem , Tightgroup is +/-.6 when weighed WTF? I must have tryed weighing 100+ loads and if I try for 3.2gr I will get a +/- of .6 . anyone else have this problem? am I stuck with powder I cant use ? Like I say 231 will meter +/- .1 so what the hell

Have you got a powder baffle in your powder meter? makes a difference with some powders but not all.

Is your powder thrower full? that can throw it.
Have you changed calibers lately and forget to change something, like the funnel?

Haven't ever used either, but is the 231 a flake powder? Mind you, the spherical Tite-group should flow.
"...if I try for 3.2gr..." That just a test? 3.2 of Tietgroup is under minimum for any 9mm bullet.

231 is spherical (ball) ,tightgroup looks more like flake , 3.2 is the min for a 147gr 3.6 is the max for a 147 so not to much room for error

Its a very fine powder, some would say finer then the the OP

they look damm near identical , Its driving me nuts

im using the LNL AP with 9mm 124gr bullets at 4.0 grn and it works pretty good. it does go down to 3.8 sometimes but it is pretty consistent at 4. I am using the baffle, 3/4 full hopper and the pistol insert.

I use tightgroup. it sticks to everything but always meters fine for me. Usually +- 0.1gn for 9pm and .45acp. Consistency is to major key I find. I make sure to run the press te same way, every stroke the same speed. It should sound like a mentrone when spitting out ammo. I've found the dillon can have a larger spread, as high as 0.5gn if you're not rythmatic.

I'm using a dillon powder drop on a 650xl.

i recently decided to give titegroup a try and had a hard time getting accurate measurements with it as well, i also found that its extremly dirty and when using it the action of some of my guns just dont like it, needless to say i wont be a repeat user

I can't see the difference. Can you see the difference?

I really can't see the difference between the 2 apart from the flakes being smaller on the TightGroup.
I have no problem getting consistent charges with it through my LnL AP.

Was the baffle removed to ensure that the measure was completely empty of all powder before the TightGroup was poured in?

Ya doing something wrong, check your setup first. I use Clays, that is quite large non-spherical flakes, and have very consistent powder drop with LNL AP. Worst was 0.1gr so far, in last 3K rounds I loaded. Numbers are real.

From my personal experience, TG flows and measures beter than W231.

Thanks for the Picture , I was going to put one up but you beat me to it . The hornady meaure dosent have a baffle , mabey I need to pic one up? But yes it is compleaty empty .

I wish it was that easy to say , But empty old powder out , put new powder in , set, do about 20 test loads and get a +/- of .6?

Both 231 and Titegroup are ball powders. They should meter very consistantly.
I kinda figered that , the 231 meters fine . I can set at 4 ,throw 20 charges into a pan and the scale will come out 80.2 ,singles 4,4,4,4,3.9,4,4,4.1,4,4,4,4,3.9 etc...... I dont really care if I even use tightgroup now ,but Now I have to make it work as it is driving me NUTS:bangHead::runaway:f:P:2::bangHead:

Odd. Titegroup is one of the best powders I've measured for consistent throws (as determined by the correlation coefficient while fitting a line to different throw settings), and I use the same throw that you do. Are you using the pistol rotor? The rifle one will be inconsistent with <5gr charges (although you report good results with 231...).

I Totally agree with NavyCuda!!!

As the title says.. i have found the same thing with my Dillon 550. If in pay very close attention to the rhythm of my stroke (now that sounds a bit odd, LOL !!!) on my Dillon 550 i can get a very consistent powder throw.
I normally weigh every 1/10 charge just to make sure of the charge and over the two years i have been reloading have seen that consistency comes from rhythm of the stroke (LOL). To break it down even more.. its the amount of movement (or shake) the powder measure goes through on each cycle that i think gives the consistency.

I measure my powder in milligrams, which is a finer measurement than grains. 64.79 milligrams = 1 grain. Therefore 6.479 milligrams = 0.1 grains. I use VVN320 and IMR SR4756 (in 9mm, .40 and .45) and both meter well with this system I usually get about a 3 milligram spread (over 100 loaded cases, 10 of the weighed) at most when i pay attention to rhythm.

Another thing i do is always freshly fill the powder hopper using a funnel (I use a piece of paper formed into a funnel) for each loading session. I found that powder does settle over time and a freshly filled hopper will deliver most consistent charges.

Ok my last suggestion is to use VVN320 instead of Titegroup. Both powders have very similar burn rates but i do know that VVN320 really meters well and is a very clean powder.

HOpe this helps

Here is a pic of the baffle in mine with IMR XBR (8208) in the hopper.
The baffle came with the powder measure supplied with my LnL AP Progressive.
Give Hornady a call on Monday and they'll ship one out to you.
Be patient it seems to take 3 weeks for anything to get to me.

PS: Ask them to ship it to you via USPS.
It saves on UPS trying to screw you for brokerage fees.

i'm using a 550 , used both 231 & titegroup & found no probs, all pwds need to be settled in the meas ,10 throws to weigh[together for ave], static might be a concern, but i did find that titegroup did vary a liitle more. @ the crony & out of the ransom no big diff , same group ave , same 10 shot ave vel , no extreme +/-. DRG135 @ 3.4 tg x 1.110/1.115 works well in 5". hope you find the prob & let us know
