Can't seem to zero my rifle.

i slapped a new scope on my savage the other day, a Bushnell legend.

I got it bore sighted and then brought it to the range and set up my target at 100 yards.

i aimed dead center and took 3 shots. Not one was even on the paper.

I moved my target to a shorter range with a closer backstop so i could see the splash.

I shot 3 rounds again and seen the splash on the far right. I tried to adjust my scope but i ran out of traverse and even then it was still firing far right.

What am i doing wrong here? I've sighted in many rifles with out any problems.

Also i can;t seem to get my cross hairs to level out. i eye them up and they look fine even after i tighten the screws then after awhile the crosshairs look cockeyed again. :mad:
 
This may seem obvious, but are the rings and/or base loose?


A good check to see if the scope is done or not is to remove the top rings from another rifle/scope combo, set it in, and tighten. Just three or so rounds, look for pattern, not zero. If it's all over the place, it's either the shooter (unlikely, as you have sighten in a scope before), or the scope won't hold zero (it is just a Legend, after all...)

The bases are new and solid, i already checked. Yes it just a legend but so far the cheap ole simmons that came with the rifle was much better, lol

I am gonna try a new set of rings/base before i switch up the scope. I will get back with the range report.
 
Good idea. I'm leaning torwards the scope not holding zero, or possibly the receiver not being tapped correctly from the factory. Does it look fairly square?
 
A buddy of mine had this problem, he turned the rear ring around (not necessarily your case) and the scope lined up and zeroed fine.
 
Something doesn't seem to be lined up properly. The screw holes should be OK if you had a scope on it before...

This makes me think your scope is pooched...moving crosshairs...
 
Yes when i switch the scope i switched the rings. I just bought what was available to me at the time. 1" weaver rings.
 
Is the rear base of the type, such as a Leupold STD model, that has two large screws that grab the rear ring from either side? Those are for coarse windage adjustment, and might be way over to one side.

They work now...

Those are typical Weaver bases. Just make sure everything is good and tight, then try bore sighting by looking down the barrel at 20 or so yards and lining up the reticle. If you still run out of adjustment range, you may have a bad scope that has the reticle installed off centre to the erector assembly.

It's a standard Weaver base with an extension ring on the front that accommodates mounting a scope with a short tube; I also find that Savage long actions need these with almost any scope and a Weaver setup.
