they are being protected as a member of the food chain .................. for the predators that need them to survive grizzlies coyotes hawks etc...... need them to sustain their diet .....just my two cents worth

I'll be in Sask in April. I'll be after the brown menace as well.

I saw a few yellow-bellies while I lived in Williams Lake. Saw one in the grass next to Hwy 97 in the Cariboo Towing yard. Just sitting there watching the world go by.

There are a few out already, and actually mid April is when the action really starts to heat up. Good timing for a gopher shoot!

I was in SW (Lethbridge) Alberta last year for the same week there were white out snow storms everywhere had to get a hotel in Pincher Creeek becauser I couldn't see 50 yards.

I did break in my now sold Ruger Mini 14 Target on about 10 gophers though it was kind of cool how they are a black dot sitting on top of the snow...

That is a columbian ground squirrel.

In Alberta we have Richardson’s Ground Squirrel, Columbian Ground Squirrel, Thirteen‑lined Ground Squirrel, Franklin’s Ground Squirrel and Golden‑mantled Ground Squirrel all of which are non-licence animals and can be whacked.

I have seen the first three you mention, but never the last two.
Are they mostly to the mountain side, or up north?

I've never shot a thirteen lined squirrel. They are few and far between, and are kind a neat to see. There is one for sure that lives on the lease at one of the wells I go to almost daily. If he is around this weekend I will try and get some pics...
