For mounting a scope on a Remington 870, do you need the cantilevered barrell or would a scope mounted on the receiver do just fine?

Try to get the cantilever barrel if you can. They are probably equally accurate as far as rigidity is concerned but every time you change barrels, you have to sight in if you use a saddle mount. It hurts when your gun likes 20$ slugs.

x3 on cantilever...

Or, save the $ and stick with iron sights. Unless your sitting in a stand and have 100yd+ shots on the menu (as the norm) do you really need a scope?

Didn't mean to stir the pot. Do a search on CGN, there are a few posts re: scopes and slugguns..

I have the saddle mount on my 870 and when changing barrels and taking the mount off and on for 3 years, I didnt have to move the scope at all. Either way with changing the barrel or the saddle mount, each year you are going to shoot off a couple of rounds for that piece of mind.

a drilled and tapped reciever with a regular one piece mounting rail will work just fine if you have that gun just for slugs. if you have to change the barrels back and forth go for the cantilever if it's a case of one gun serves all.
