Budget 1911 owner here. I bought a Canuck 1911 Commander in 9mm before the freeze, and have about 1000 rounds through it now. I've got a few other budget guns, from Tokarevs to NP22s to a Glock 48 MOS, but this Canuck 1911 has got to be my favorite for the crisp trigger, accuracy and reliability. I have not had any malfunctions of any kind, using the 9-round flush Mec-Gar magazines that it came with, nor the 10-round MecGar Competition magazines that I've also used.

I'd like to make this a thread on parts compatibility and reviews for the Canuck line of 1911s. Perhaps this information has already been posted somewhere else, and my search skills probably just suck, but I can't find any other info on these apart from a couple of 45ACP stainless 1911s by vkyle91x and Germán Sarmiento on Youtube.

From Reddit: https://www.reddit.com/r/canadaguns/comments/ailv2y/canuck_1911/
Co-worker has one in stainless. The fit and finish is world's better than a Norinco, factory trigger is pretty good, nice large sights. Is it $400-700 better than a Norinco 1911A1, not really.

Canuck firearms are manufactured in Turkey and imported by O'Dell Engineering, local to Select Shooting Supplies and a great provider of customer service and support for your Canuck firearm should the need arise.

The firearms are made to O'Dell specifications in Turkey, by Tisas, the grips are made in Niagara Falls ON by Artisan grips. -O'Dell Engineering Ltd.

The folks over on the 1911 Reddit forum seem to have a decent amount of respect for Tisas branded 1911s, and if they're the ones manufacturing the Canuck brand, would it be safe to assume that parts compatibility is good? I've tried reaching out to O'Dell Engineering but have never heard back from them.

Eventually, I will need to purchase replacement and upgraded parts. While it's functioning at 100% right now, I'd rather pick up spare parts and upgrades now - in case these also become harder to source later on down the road.

Things that I'm interested in:
  • New sights - What do I need to know about sizing and compatibility? In an ideal world, I'd like to have tritium sights in perfect alignment with an RMR-style red dot sight.
  • Mechanical maintenance - springs, levers, pins compatibility with other brands of 1911 parts.
  • Slides and barrels - I don't know what I don't know about optic slide cuts, compatibility with other 1911 barrels (e.g. longer barrels, different brands, threaded barrels, etc).

Thanks in advance. I can't be the only Canuck 1911 owner on this forum.

I'd prefer to think of it as a mark of defiance. Although it is definitely ironic to have all the Canadian markings when it's manufactured in Turkey.

...and prohibited to all but the current owner, by the very country that is to be the true North, "strong and free".

I started this thread with the hopes that other Canuck 1911 owners would post about their experiences and we can discuss things about handguns.

I'd rather this didn't become a political thread. You guys can go commiserate in a different forum. If you don't have any relevant information, you're not contributing anything - just whining.

Gives me hope my Tisas 1911 will last a long time, I’ve got a tisas 1911a1 in 45acp I’ve put about 200 rounds through and I love it, only a couple cases of it not completely going into battery but just slap it forward and it runs fine, I attribute that to a break in period

...and another on the ignore list.

Comrade Rabbit Teeth is too intolerant of the concept of freedom of speech for my liking. A suggestion, if you only want people who own your Turkish 1911 to opine, state that from the onset and save yourself the pain of having to read opinions you don't personally agree with...you know, like a personal safe space where you can control what occurs.

And to play into your safe space ideologies, I offer the following:
New sights; the slide will require machining to fit the red dot, may as well machine whatever sights you wish to match the red dot at that time...it's just common sense really, and I'm embarrassed I even had to write that out.
Mechanical; it's a government 1911. Yours is in a silly chambering, so you'll need to match spring weights for a government 1911 in the same silly chambering. Again, fairly self explanatory.
Slides and barrels; this is a confusing question. I'd suggest you do your due diligence and educate yourself and if there are any real questions regarding what you've learned, perhaps post that? As you're on my ignore list, I won't be helping you with that one though.

Take care, or don't.

Good idea to add me to the ignore list. You want to be sad about guns, I want to enjoy mine, and we don't need to interact further.

Everyone's sad about their firearms and if I say I'd rather talk about my enjoyment of guns, I'm suddenly Comrade RabbitTeeth. I believe that there are specific politics subforums called Firearms Politics Forums.

Hickok45 posted a nice video of your handgun last year! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EwtH5nukSg4

Any idea why it wouldn't go into battery? Curious what things to look into if you wanted to diagnose it.

Are you able to get 10-round magazines for your 45acp? I picked 9mm because I wanted to standardize on what all my other handguns use, and I figured I can get 10-round mags for it.

Are you shooting reloads? if have seen problems with used brass and tight or chambers that are a bit rough.
Do the plunk test, take the barrel out, hold chamber up and drop your current ammo in , it should go plunk all the way in with out any help, same
Do a few round with all your different ammo, Factory is usually not a problem, but reloads can be
while you have the slide off, take the bare slide and run back and forth on the frame , check the fit, the disconnector will cause a bit of a drag.
poor milling can, and can be cleaned up. Should not be a problem as a rule. Do not use heavy grease on the rails.

A new spring may be warranted. there are a couple other things as well , but should not be a issue on a new gun, links, bushing/barrel also mags as well

a lot of cry babies here ... i was to sell my canuck 1911 in 9mm not a commander before the ban but it did not work. so as many others im enjoying and shooting while i can and we all should. the politicians are what they are they do not care about us and we should care more about count for us ...

It wasn’t really an issue, I have only used factory ammo so far, I chalk it up to the parkerizing needing to wear in

I haven’t bought any new mags yet just using the factory ones but 10 round mags should be easy to come by, parts availability is great with single stack 1911s I’ve got 2 norinco 1911s as well in 9mm one a single and the other a double, I bought all my guns after they announced the freeze and wanted as much variety as possible
