Canuck Victor 12ga - Break In Routine?

Question for those more knowledgeable about semi-auto shotguns than me.

I recently bought this shotgun to use for skeet / trap / 5 stand and possibly 3 gun.

I had it out on the trap range a week or so ago for its first use. I found that many of the shells did not eject properly and got hung up in the action. I’d guess probably 25% or so.

I’ve heard that many people will break in a new semi auto using heavy loads (slugs, buckshot, etc) first before regularly feeding target loads.

Would this help eliminate the issue I was having?

Thanks

Mike

Maybe just high brass hunting loads for a while, not necessarily heavy tactical stuff. I take it the gun is brand new? It may be helpful to remove the factory oil from the action and relube it only lightly- sometimes heavy oil is put in to last while the gun may be on the shelf. In the process you are of course also cleaning it, always helpful with the action of a semi. Other than that, make sure that you're holding the gun firmly so that the full force of the shell is working the action.

You don't mention what shells you are using but presumably they are run of the mill 1 1/8 oz, 2 3/4 dram at 1150 fps or so. I would try a couple of other brands of ammo as some times a gun might have a dislike for a certain brand. After that I'd try some handicap or sporting clay's loads and see what happens, something around 1300 fps (3 dram) such as AA Super Sporting or equivalent. If that doesn't work then go the hunting load route for a little while.

I have never seen the model described but online I notice it states it has a 3 inch chamber. What does the cartridge designation on the barrel state? Hopefully it states 2 and 3/4 and 3 inch. It may require a slightly more powerful 2 and 3/4 inch shell than you were using... at least 3 dram quality loads, not necessarily cheaper ammo.

Buy a few boxes of the new federal top gun sporting shells . They run about 1330 fps with a 11/8 oz payload . Also as above clean the gun and lightly oil .

In my experience a hundred or so rounds or so of birdshot and takedown/cleaning has treated me well. The whole “break in” thing is kind of odd, and imo is often over stated. Proper cleaning and lubrication is more important imo.
