Cap N Ball revolver sound off!

I just added an original civil war vintage Bacon revolver to my collection. I will be shooting it as soon as I can access some .31 round balls. Any ideas on that? The chamber mouths measure about .311"-312".
Thanks,
Rob

Question for you guys shooting Navy Colts and Remingtons. (I have Uberti, not sure if that matters).

Had my first day shooting and the caps fall off with CCI #10, I'm still trying to find Remington #10 (anywhere around Ottawa to find these?). Also, when the hammer falls I get misfires every other shot.

What is the best combination of nipple and cap? Should I buy Treso nipples? and if so what's the best cap for them, #10 or 11? I've seen CCI #11 at LeBarons, but I heard they're not a great combination with Pyrodex. Anyways, I've read so many different things about this I'm very confused!

What's the actual bore diameter for cap & ball .32's anyhow? Seeing as how .36's and .44's are actually .38's and .45's respectively, I could see a .32 pistol needing a ball in the vicinity of .330.

Edit: I just checked the specs on modern repro .32 pistols, and they come in at Bore: .31 and Grove: .325

So .330 is definitely too big.

Not necessarily - To get a good fit in the chamber, any percussion revolver should be shot with ball measuring over bore diameter - it gets "swaged" to appropriate size when rammed into the chamber mouth, anyway. In fact, ideally a noticeable lead ring should get sheared off each ball as it is rammed into the chamber. Assuming that any buckshot used for projectiles in a .31 C&B will be pure lead (or close to pure) I think .330 would be a great starting diameter.

For that matter, it depends on what size buckshot you're talking about - "single ought" (0) shot is .32", "double ought" (00) is .33" and "triple ought" (000) is .36" .....

Randy77, I find that with loose caps, that a slight squeeze to make them oval helps to keep them on. I also find, with some caps, that they fragment and drop in between the recoil shields, and bind the hammer. It's amazing how fast one develops a wrist flick after each shot to dislodge any debris. Someone will probably chime in on Treso nipples. KD

Chiming in on Treso nipples.

Just got mine from ThunderRidge. Put them on my Uberti '58 Remmie. 25 rounds in a row through the gun first trip to the range, and no misfires using Remington #10 caps. Bought them from Gagnon Sports in Oshawa, before the fire. Don't know if they still carry them. I bought 600, so I'm good for a bit yet.
