I have a S&W M&P9 which has a capacity of 10 + 1. However, when I tried, with one round in chamber, a full 10 round magazine can't be fully inserted into the pistol.

Am I doing something wrong? With 10 rounds in the magazine, the 10th round is tight against the magazine lips.

No, you're not doing anything wrong. M&P mags are notoriously bad for this phenomenon. In fact, sometimes you can't get 10 rounds in the mag without a struggle.

One method of relieving the pressure on the 10th round is to sand down the legs on the mag follower. This has been discussed and posted numerous times in the past.

This along with some spring break in makes it doable.

This happens all the time with the 10 round AR pistol mags as well. The solution is the same, sand down the follower legs to provide a bit of extra free play.

The problem is that some mags are overzealously pinned to exactly 10 rounds rather than have space equivalent to 10.5 or so.....and in some cases that results in mags with space for only 9.9 rounds. As noted, sanding down the bottom of the follower a couple of MM's will solve the problem.

The mags are man that way so that our dicks don't fall off and we all go to jail for ten yrs when the occasional 11th rd can be squeezed in a mag somewhere..... :)

They really don't understand just how fast CDN shooters have become at mag changes do they... :):):)

Soon to come...mandatory waiting periods between mag changes.....

The issue is with the mag followers in the Smith mags. Spittin, cussin and slammin is not going to allow two things to occupy the same space at the same time. The only cure is to sand down the legs on the followers. Note the follower bottoms out on the springs. That won't change no matter how used they get to be. The older "blued" mags worked fine. The newer "black" mags are a PITA.

Take Care

Bob
