Not sure what to make of this?... Are you using one of the s**ttiest pistols ever produced to say that .45 is best? Or is it the opposite? Shooting twice would be silly with that gun, you'd likely die reloading.

When you are living in an occupied country, you take what you can get.

It was a single shot that reloaded with a dowel, henceforth, they required a round that could produce one hit stops.

I'd rather have my Glock17 then my SA 1911-A1. I know for a fact that I can put more rounds down range in a rapid and relatively accurate fashion with a 9mm then with a .45.

The way i see it is this....if you're on the highway, would you rather get hit by a porsche doing 150km/h, or an F-150 doing 100 km/h? Either way, your car, and possibly yourself will come out in a pretty sh--y state!
The .45 is the truck, and the 9mm is the porche. For s--ts and giggles, I'll call the .40 some soccer-mom, compact SUV.
No matter what, you're in a bad car accident. If the car hits you in the right way, and in the right spot... you're six feet under.
Moral of the story, its all about placement. It doesn't matter what you hit them with, its where you hit them. That's the best way I explain 'stopping power' and more importantly, shot placment to newbie shooters on the job.

No need to sacrifice power for high capacity. Just get a 10mm. With full power loads it will stop just about anything (up to large bears), and 15+1 capacity to boot (in a G20)

i can 'drift" from 250 yards out with a 44- if i'm surprised, i'll take the 9mm on full auto- since i can't have it both ways, i'll take the 9MM IN MY UZI- with hps

With today's defensive loads 9mm and up will give "one shot stops", WITH PROPER SHOT PLACEMENT. When your life is on the line and the adrenaline is pumping, remembering the mantra for consistent accurancy, grip, stance, sight picture, etc..will be all but impossible. It will come down to muscle memory.
You should expect more misses than hits, especially with a moving target that's firing back. I'm going with the largest caliber I can comfortably shoot, both accurately and quickly. In my case that's .40SW. The 2/3 round advantage over a .45 is a secondary bonus. If I was as accurate and could get back on target as quickly with a .45, then there'd be a decision to make.

... I keep coming back to what I've read in, among other things, Emergency by Neil Strauss. Now I appreciate that this book in particular isnt the see all and end all of authority,...

...

You need to get some better reading material on the subject. Much better. :p

Start here: http://www.firearmstactical.com/wound.htm

Then read these articles: http://www.firearmstactical.com/tactical.htm

And then buy this book: http://pw2.netcom.com/~dmacp/index.html. If you are cheap, you can also Google the author and the book's name and find it as a free download in a few different places. I bought the book to support the author's work, but that's just me...

THEN..... come back and start a new thread so that we may intelligently discuss this contentious and often misunderstood issue without the folklore and voodoo based opinions... ;)

Good luck and happy reading!

EDITED to add:

by the way, I did not vote in your pole. Once you are done with your homework assignments you will understand why. ;)

High capacity for me 17+1 or 33+1. :)

Hi-caps don't mean jack.... it's all in the shot placement anyway... :p

NAA.

I'd also go for a 10mm but in a 4.25" barreled, now with XS Sights tritium big dot G29 with G20 mag's...

Oh by the way the 10mm can do anything and everything that all of the other standard production semi auto rounds can do and everything they can't...

This thread needs more TDC. He would have known the true answer.

Glock 17, Principals of Marksmanship, IDPA and IPSC gamers suck, Tactical Response firearms courses came down from Mount Sinai engraved in stone, everybody should take them, all other training is basically pointless.

Wow, it's like he never left.

I'd think that the majority of people; once they realize that they are wounded, instinctively look for a chair. I'd think professionals of the trade; soldiers, policemen, perhaps even some criminals ; might be dedicated enough to continue til the engagements ending or the wound renders them unable to function.
My father was involved in a hunting accident in which he was wounded in the leg and torso. He remarked that he "knew he was shot in the leg and had better drive to the hospital. But once he became aware of the belly wound, it took all the wind out of his sails" .
Professionals; people who have dealt out lead, for real; would likely be able to continue functioning longer than civilians.
I'd go with a high cap. 9mm. Enough rounds in the enemy and one of them is going to (hopefully) shut him down.
Hopefully I never have to find out...
IMO

I don't see much difference between 9mm,.40 and .45 neither do people who think about such things for a living. I guess I have yet to drink any kool-aid. That said I am a big 10mm Auto fan;). I shoot 5 different cartridges out of my Glock 20. My pick for a "TEOTWAWKI" gun...

Hey i was just wondering about what you said, obviously 40 and 10 but what are the other two 22? 9? is it an advantage arms slide kit? also you know any good places for G20 parts?

I have an Advantage Arms 22LR conversion for my G20 it is an accurate fast shooting reliable kit that I highly recommend.

.357 Sig
.40S&W
10mm Auto
9X25 Dillon
.22LR

I am looking at picking up a G21 slide and barrel to add .45 ACP to the list. If I can find one anyway. I don't shoot .357 Sig and 9X25mm much but I do have the option.

For Glock parts, w ww.glockparts.com for bits and pieces or w ww.accuratelyshooting.com For Lone wolf products. Beware the turnaround is very long from the latter....
