I just finished up back dating this SGW to an XM-177E1. Brownells makes vintage parts so you can build pretty much any older M16/AR15 now. I hope they start selling them in Canada at some point.

Very ###y, I love retro carbines. I shot a real XM177E2 with a completely smooth bore a few years ago where a lot of gas was escaping around the projectile in the bore, it was a lot of fun. The rate of fire was down to around 500rpm, which was weird for a little 5.56 carbine.

I took it out shooting again and still had zero malfunctions. The short guns get a bad rep but if you buffer the extractor it pretty much fixes any problems.

Here's my original Colt SP1 Carbine fitted with a Spikes Cold-Hammer-Forged 11.5" Lightweight Barrel Assembly for the "GAU-5" look. The GAU was the US Air Force designation for the carbine which proceeded the US Army XM-177E2. The GAU-5 lacked the Forward-Assist feature of the later carbines and rifles. It's most notable use was during the 1970 raid on the Prisoner of War Camp at Sontay North Vietnam, conducted by US SOF during the Vietnam War. In order to be fully "correct", my carbine would have the Bayonet Lug ground off, the Front Sling Swivel Rivet replaced by a roll-pin, and the markings amended.

Note that the Colt AR15 SP1 Carbines came factory equipped with the period-correct Aluminum Buttstock with Vinyl Acetate Coating. Also note the original "charcoal gray" anodized finish of the early Colt Receivers and small parts versus the matte black anodizing of modern AR components.

Someone needs to buy it. I lost interest and don't really care any more. I was going to put it on Nodak A1 lower.

Great looking guns at an amazingly low weight. This I imagine, is what Stoner envisioned the AR-15 to be.

I've been hunting around for an SP1 Carbine, but they never come up for sale in Canada.

Looks like I'll have to go the way of importing one from the US... Any other options for an early style carbine?

They pop up for sale every once and a while. As for other options, there's the Colt rerelease line and Brownells classic series.

Or start with a Nodak lower and source other parts elsewhere.

You get more of those problems in full-auto but yes stiffening the extractor will help a lot.

I had a 10.5 norinco that would never extract I had to change the spring and add a buffer. The bolt on this gun came with the buffer.
