Carbine Bark

Ganderite those M44's with Russian milsurp 762X54 are obnoxious if one is on the line next to you I agree. I couldn't believe the wallop and I shoot earginsplitten magnums as well.

I'm wondering what powder the Russians used in the ball round, and am guessing if it was going to be efficient in a 91/30's barrel , it must be leaving a M44 at around 25,000 psi??? Anyone know the muzzle pressure on the M44 firing milsurp??

Don't know muzzle pressure on 44, but DuPont built several powder factories in Russia in the 1930s and the stuff looks and acts like 4895.

Hercules built them 3 mills in the 1920s, which is why their pistol powder all looks, acts and loads like Bullseye.

Hope this helps.

For what help it may be, the markings for powder type on surplus Soviet crates of ball ammunition you usually see around here:

VT for rifle (7,62x54R)
VUFL for carbine (7,62x39)
P-45 for pistol (7,62x25)

Thanks. That is exactly what I wanted to know. I wish I had a Db meter. I could measure some guns right now.

I shot my son's carbine today (with muffs) and the recoil was not bad, so I think I will go with either with a #5 flash hider (also solves the front sight issue) or just a crown.

I would re-think using the #5 flash hider. It is shaped like a megaphone, and acts the same way...increasing noise! When I first saw the cone shaped flash hiders for the M1 Garand Sniper rifle I couldn't believe they actually used them. I'm sure they did actually suppress the muzzle flash to some degree, but more than made up for it with the increase in noise. A bad deal for a sniper trying to remain hidden.

Using the faster powder as Smellie recommends, or better ear defenders will solve the issue. My little Swede carbine is definetely a barker, but with plugs and muffs I hardly notice the report. The force from the muzzle blast is another story though, and one possible reason for the cone shaped hider on the "Jungle Carbine"

Strangely enough, if you must use something, the old "Birdcage" style AR 15, and HK G-3 flashiders did a good job of breaking up muzzle blast and taming the flash. Something to consider...

"...flash hider also has..." Nope. The short barrel puts the sonic boom closer to your head. The FH doesn't change that or change the way sound travels.
"...the ear-splitting CRACK... That's the sound of the air returning after the supersonic bullet and gasses pass through.
"...can actually HEAR what..." Ya just have to be more selective. snicker.
"...Why am I getting a hearing aid..." MOT thinks you can hear other vehicles from the cab of a truck, for me. Biggest downside is the audiologist cranked the volume up so I could pass the test and I could hear kids crying on other planets. Had it turned down.
