Hey all, I've looked at my reloading manuals but want other peoples opinons on the 30. cal Carbine loads.

Do you think they are strong enough for deep woods eastern ontario deer hunting out to 125 yards?

Thanks,
Craig

a .22 can kill a deer if you're a good shot at close range. You need to know your limitations and the limitations of the caliber.

Personally, I would only use the .30 carbine for a broadside to the heart or lungs and only under 75 yards at a stationary target. Sort of like pretending you're using a muzzle-loader and are picky about shot placement ;)

But realistically, I would most certainly just chose a different gun better suited to the task.

And of course it would have to be a non-restricted M1.
The standard 110 grain bullet would be awfully light.
With a heavier bullet, don't see that it would be any worse than the people using 357 mag.

of course ;)
Was thinking about the 1919a4 with mount in the EE forum for my treestand ;) J/K

think the Conservation Officer would want to see the papers on that????

lol

quoting Frank Barnes, Cartridges of the World author "It is wholly a small game or varmit number despite contrary claims", "The author used a Carbine to hunt small game and deer.......so he has a pretty good idea....."

I read another quote by another author in which he talked about 7 shots into a whitetail.....

use a bigger rifle is my advice.....you deserve it and so does the deer....:)

I wouldn't think twice about using mine, except you can't hunt with any restricted firearm. Even a non-restricted would draw unwanted attention from overzealous constables and CO's who only know that carbines are restricted.
110 grain HP's and IMR4227. Gives about 1800fps and makes a hole in a ground hog the size of a grapefruit. SP's will do, but not factory. Factory is loaded to milspecs and that's too light.
Shot placement is critical. If your rifle won't put every shot into a 9" pie plate, off hand at 100, it's not good enough to hunt with at any range.
