Curious about carbon fiber barrels and how they compare to steel barrels. What is the longevity? Is carbon ring cleaning the same as steel. Looking at a Bergara BXR.

It may come down to preference rather than performance especially for what you plan on using it for. I don't see many carbon barrels at PRS matches, when I do they're typically on rifles build for children to shed weight and make it easier to handle. Friend of mine had a B14R with a carbon barrel, if it sat in the sun between stages he noticed groups would grow significantly - switched to a steel barrel and no issues since.

PRS rifles want the balance just forward of the mag well for barricade balance, so you start with the biggest heaviest chunk of high-pressure steel target pipe you can get forward, then work your way back to a lightweight stock.

For a rifle you're carrying all day, lightweight everything would be wonderful. Some target disciplines put you under a weight limit so you have to budget, more grams where it helps your score, scrimp grams away from things that shouldn't hurt you. All depends what the rifle's for, and there are a lot of different niche applications people tune theirs into.

For general readers and those new to firearms, there's something to always keep clear with regard to carbon barrels. They aren't completely carbon fiber. They have a steel core that's rifled. That steel core is wrapped in carbon fibers.

As a result, there's nothing that should make a .22LR carbon barrel have a shorter or longer lifespan than a steel barrel. Accuracy potential, as always, will depend on the quality of the bore. Carbon fiber barrels have no special qualities that allow them to shoot any ammo more accurately than a steel barrrel. As noted above, any advantage is primarily about weight, when less weight is desired.
