Carcanos $350????

If you're shooting the commercial ammo that's available today, likely your issues are caused by bullets that are .004 in to small for the bore. If the bore is worn, maybe as much as .006 in.

+1, I have found the commercial ammo is hit or miss (pardon the pun) and reloaded for my Carcano (M91 long rifle and not from the recent batch) and she did really well with the proper bullets.

I find that with my TS Carcano it groups around 8 or 9 inches at 100 meters. Pretty bad but that is with the 140 grain PPU bullets which are too small for the bore. Im sure that once I reload with some larger lead bullets that will shrink to at least 4 inches at 100 meters. Plus it will be a cheap gun to shoot with the right bullet mold.
Also someone just said that the TS Carcano is crap. It is not. The Carcano TS was built from the ground up to be a short handy rifle for units that did not require the long rifle and were made to have a short gain twist barrel. Now if you buy a long rifle that has been cut down to the TS pattern then the gain twist rifling is completely ruined and those key hole bullets all the time. DO NOT BUY A CARCANO TS WITH THE LONG RIFLE REAR SIGHT! Corwin was selling these cut down long rifles and I would urge everyone not to buy them

....CARCANOS are well made rifles !!!!!
......but like FORD Pickups, there are f150,f250,f350 f450s!!!
.........my 1998 F150 is like new, my grandson has a 2011 thats a rust bucket-junker 4x4........ya really want to see first hand what ''bargain'' firearm you are getting.....
............LAST real bargain mil-surps I recall were the SKS ,REFURBS for under 200 dollars.....

Do you need the stripper clip or can you load it with out.

You can break the extractor I believe if you don’t use the clip
If you don’t want to use the clip but want to shoot single shots there is a plastic block that you can buy on e bay that allows you to do this

Well, i found some stripper clips on ebay for a decent price. Got three carcanos; one feom Great North Gun Co, two from Corwin. I have to say, in my case, about two hours of work for each, and they are ready for the range test.

All looked awful. Grime, dirt, dust, sand, etc. One stock was quite dry and needed many hairline splits stabilized. Another stock was cracked, but easily repaired with epoxy. Only one of the three has a pitted bore, but probably shootable. The othet two have good+ or vg bore. A few screws are stripped (nose cap retaining screw) but won't prevent me from using the guns. Bolts needed complete disassembly and cleaning. All are now reassembled, stocks look ok once cleaned and oiled, metal has patina but look ok. So, not a bad first contact with Carcanos!

I had a sporter eatons carcano. I would slide the shell into the bolt and close it. This way the extractor does not have to jump over the shell. Was this still wrong? (I have clips now for my new one)

I have a TS (1898, first year of manufacture!) from Corwin arrived 3 weeks ago (Their last TS so I would guess, not the best...).
Pretty nice shape for the age, about 85% of the blue still there, Refurb in 1947. I slugged the bore and it's .268-.269 as it should.
I ordered some .268 cast bullets from Jets bullet and reloaded with 12gr of Trail boss. The velocity should be around 1200-1300fps. with these light loads I get about 2" groups at 50m and 5" (vertical spread) at 100m. Can't ask more than that! with that short barrel and not so good sights. I really like the gun. No keyholes with the right size bullets.
Don't expect accuracy from the .264 commercial stuff!
Very happy of my purchase!

I know I should probably post this in the reloading section, but since you brought it up... I have the same cast bullets, but my reloading manual doesn't have Carcano listed. Any guide for a starting load for using any of the following IMR powders: 4064, 4831, 4350, 4320, or 3031
Thanks eh

All my light loads are with Hodgdon Trail boss. Can't go wrong with it.
I loaded some rounds with H4350 but didn't try it yet. 32gr, starting load. Look at the Hodgdon website, they have loading data available for 6.5 Carcano.

I had looked on the Hodgdon website but the jet bullets are 145gr and they list loading options for 120, 140, and 160. I am still too new to reloading to know what to do if the numbers don't match perfectly, so in light of that I didn't proceed further

yes as Wesson says use the 140gr load options and start low.
