Wondering about care of a lend lease decal on an Inglis pistol. About 80+ percent intact. Any do's or don't to keep it in good shape.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

All the best,

Mike.

Boy, I think that's a tough one. What about going to the local signwriters and getting some of the clear sticky vynal (sp?) that they use for stencils and cutting out enough to just cover the decal? Doubt that you would ever be able to peel it off again without wrecking the decal, but at least it would protect it forever???

Would love to get one of those decals for my Chinese contract Inglis highpower. I saw a bunch of them go on E-bay once, but missed them not thinking I would ever own an Inglis pistol

This may not answer your whole question, but one little thing worth mentioning is for you to remove rings before handling it, and asking the same of anyone else who wants to handle it. It might save you some scratches to the decal, and is a polite way to let friends know that you are concerned about preserving it & to be very careful.

DO:
Not shoot it!
Not touch it!
Not cover it!
Not oil it!
Not scrape it!
Not rub/abrade it!
DON'T:
Shoot it!
Touch it!
Cover it!
Oil it!
Scrape it!
Rub/Abrade it!

Seriously consider buying another gun... Mine is now down to just fragmentary traces of the decal...

Thanks Enfield and Delta. I have no plans to shoot it. Minimal handling.

That's what I'm worried about, enviromental factors, oil form fingers and even the foam lining the case (has gun oil on it). A suggestion was to wrap some plastic over it?

As per our PMs, there is no magic answer. The one I've got, just sits on a wall, and no one touches it. It doesn't matter what anyone does to cover/protect the decals, they are just too brittle to handle any way, any how.

Last I heard, if you can find one, originals are going for $100 each. And they ain't easy to find.

I've got a new small safe with sillica pack for moisture. There it will sit.

Thank you all for your help.

Those decals were'nt just used on the Browning HPs. I've seen them on the No19 radio sets that were furnished to the Russians as lend lease. They also appeared on the Inglis BRENs. I use a tool/accessory box made for a "chore horse" generator to store my Lee Enfield parts stash. It has a nice intact decal on the lid.

I'd love to see that.

I have seen ONE HiPower with the decal intact. Fellow brought it into a gun store years ago. It was in the ORIGINAL BOX! Obviously NEVER fired.

I'm in the same boat. The genleman I purchased it from has had it 16yrs, unfired. new in appearence.

Come to think about it, if your good with woodworking, you should make a nice wooden display case for it. Some nice deep red felt or whatever fabric lining a maple box with brass hardware seem pretty fitting for an Inglis. Would keep it safe, and look good while doing it. If you have a gun room you could mount it on your wall, or if no gun room it might look good on the door of your safe.

Funny you should mention this. My brother in law is a wiz with fine woodworking. He was mentioning building a case for it.
