Just a suggestion: grab a bear tag as well as caribou tags. I bought one at the last minute and came home with the biggest black bear of my life, taken spot-and-stalk...one of the highlights of my hunting life. :)

good advice especially if there is any blueberries or black ones. they re tasty.
 
I will do just that! I have to check the regs to see what small game is in season. I have never had ptarmigan and hope to try that.

you will hear them before seeing them ....never seen any other birds except the waterfowl but there are forbidden to hunt like wolf Under the james bay act dont even think about it .....
 
Having done a caribou hunt in northern Manitoba this February I'll give you my 2 cents...

I took my Savage 111 .30/06, other guns taken by my hunting buddies were a Savage chambered in .300 win mag, Savage 116 in .30/06 and a Savage 111 in .270...Guess we like our Savages...

Caribou are a pretty light bodied animal. The .300 Mag ripped them right up, the .30/06's did a little less damage, but still tore up the ribs. On my next hunt I'll take a .270 win.

The .270 was effective enough for very clean kills. Minimal tissue damage, and either went clean through the animal or was stopped on the other side of the hide.

We were hunting off snowmobiles and quads with tracks...so weight wasn't a big issue to us. As long as you are confident with your rifle and loads either of your rifles will suffice. The nice part about Caribou is you can take long shots if you want, or get really damn close!

I am still kicking myself for not having prepared to take a couple of Ptarmigan. There was a shotgun to borrow in camp, but I had no licence. At that time of year (end of September) they are halfway through the change from all-rusty-brown to all-white, and they are absolutely beautiful. A pair, male and female, would have made a wonderful mount on the wall. Definitely something to consider.
 
The Inuit guide shot a few and the cook made us a ptarmigan soup, was really good. Tasted like spruce grouse. Would of been fun to shoot a limit. Yes beautiful bird indeed and cool sound.
