Guys who have hunted Caribous in BC with over the counter tags, what area did you hunt them in?

I am familiar with the sections of 7b and 7a where they can be hunted, but not from the perspective of looking for 'bous. I seem to have seen most of them in the areas north of Fort St James and around Williston.

Success stories?

General hunting suggestions and pics?

There's an LEH with some restrictions in that region and open seasons to the SW iirc?

Looks like the area by Ediza/telegraph is closed but other areas around Dease and Iskut are open.

I think the region I'm most interested in is by the NWT tbh.

region 6, Cassiar mountains. Charter a float plane and pick a lake. Lots of Caribou and OTC tags. Just got back from sheep hunting up there. Saw a pile of caribou.
 
Did you fly out of Dease Lake? I've heard Watson Lake is potentially better?

You ever hunt them to the east of there in 7a?
 
Dease or Watson is pretty well equal. Less driving for me to Dease. Never hunted them in 7a but a few times in 7b. It’s totally doable but the ground is way more mountainous and there are less caribou. In region 6 if you can get on one of the big plateaus, you can get into really big numbers and you can see a looong way. It’s possible to shoot and pack a bull for multiple kilometres. Some of those bulls are BIG. You’re gonna need multiple guys or multiple trips to carry all the meat out, never mind head and antlers as well. I’ll give you the name of some lakes if you’re interested. Just PM me.
 
The BC caribou scene has seen major changes over the last few years. I have shot a few, one a record bull, but non recently. Used to see lots, shot a real nice bull on the Klappan but that areas whole's population has been wiped out, they cannot sustain constant cow/calf hunting year round. My other area's in region 7 are now no vehicles, park or closed season in all areas where vehicle access is possible, but again they are not there like they were a few years ago. As other have suggested I would recommend a flight into a well researched area and I would suggest soon as I foresee the end of OTC caribou tags in BC soon. Most other jurisdictions in Canada have already closed. Make a plan, go with a couple like minded people, solo packing is very tough as they are dam big, 600 lbs for a big bull, and in my mind that's 300 lbs of inedible meat if shot in rut. They taste as they smell in Oct but are good early Sept.

You got that right. I'm surprised they haven't discontinued the permit to accompany yet. I'm thinking about doing a fly in hunt next year but it would mean missing the elk rut. Oh the choices!
 
Plan was to be out for season opener, I have no interest in shooting a rutting bull.

I’m looking for someone to accompany but all the guys I know who would be into it will be guiding sheep. If anyone’s interested feel free to send me a PM
 
Last time I went to Dease Lake the indigenous personnel had logs or blocked all the roads to the hunting zones.

I say organize and do next year. Its a must if you want a bou, writing is on the wall for a closure and or lots less opportunities. I assumed the same for the G-Bear but managed 3 nice life size to look at daily, last one 2 weeks before manage by emotion Horgan closed it, still feel robbed I did not get a fall coastal to round them out. The whole Dease area is a #### storm this year, Taltan Terrorists are uprising again but this time under the Covid BS. Only way to go is to fly in, as I said my real good chance drive in areas are wiped out. Not because of resident hunters with compulsory inspection. Not saying some don't still exist with some work just I do not know of any. A few years ago I had a permit to accompany for a buddy in Alberta, we got 2 moose and 2 goats in 2 weeks but could not locate a big enough one for his final tag, a Bou.

With some good investigative work I am sure you can still find one. My buddy a taxidermist was just here, just had a 400"+ dropped off. WOW is all I could say. Savage 110L and you need to "hook" up and get it done. Elk populations are on the rise, caribou are tanking besides, caribou Aug and first 10 days of sept still leaves rest of Sept elk rut to get one of them also.

I leave Mon for a 2 month all over BC fall hunt. No bou tag in my pocket, been some time since I saw a shooter with open season.
