Caribou hunt, just back from a terrific caribou hunt in Northern Quebec with the Rawhide Hunting crew from Wild TV . We were hunting with Jack Hume Adventures Inc, I highly recommend this hunt.

My Blaser K95 single shot, I used a 7 x 65 R barrel, 160 gr speer bullet, reload at 2,735 fps fitted with a Swarovski Z6 2-12 scope. Shot was 250 meters prone over my "ruck" as a rest, a one shot kill. I then packed the head and cape one mile to the lake, of course the sun had to come out and give us our warmest day, I was panting good by the time I reached our boat. I came home with 53 lbs of meat, Caribou steak for supper tomorrow.
 
Glad the winds were in your favor for a good hunt.

I had to look up the Blaser K98 7x65r.
Thats some nice metal and wood craftsmanship .Do you have a pic of yours.

I have never shot 7x65r. Did you choose it for ballistics, stopping power or just a favorite big game cartridge.

And of course you took it with one shot. We are Canadians, it's not like we have 19 more chances in the mag.

We didn't see any Moose, the country looked ideal for them but they get 6 to 7 feet of snow every winter so I don't think they would like that. We did see 7 Black Bear and two super bears were shot by members of my party. A group in one of the most Northern camps did have a Musk Ox walk up to them, that would have been great to see. We heard Wolves one night, a good sound as they do follow the Caribou. Never saw any mass migration, that is rare to see these days , we saw groups of 10 to 15 at a time. These are all members of the Leaf River herd hat is reported to be 400,000 strong, it used to be 700,000 !

I will find a photo of my rifle and post it tomorrow. My K95 was purchased with an 8 x 57 R barrel, loaded with a 220 gr RN bullet it was my first choice for African Plains game, short range but with lot's of "thump". When I went to New Zealand two years ago I purchased a 7 x 65 R barrel as I wanted a longer range capability in the mountains, I thought this would be a better calibre for Caribou as I expected to take a longer range shot. In Africa I think I shot everything under 100 meters. I picked both cartridges as they are classic hunting rds and the rim is preferred for break open single shot rifles as the cartridge drops in and the fired brass falls out when you open the rifle and raise the muzzle, she is light and balances superbly, never let me down yet, she is a favorite rifle of mine now.

I do so miss caribou hunting! We have the George River herd here and they were almost 900 000 strong. Seeing several herds in the thousands on each and every trip was common place and I could not wait to bring my boys on a hunt. Sadly by the time my oldest was big enough to tag along there was a moratorium on caribou hunting because of big drops in numbers and are now less than 10 000 with the red wine herd (smaller local herd) all but extinct.

In either case congrats on a great hunt. Caribou is my favourite wild meat and the sausages are supreme!
 
Caribou steaks are amazing. I did a similar hunt four years ago. We drove from Ontario in December. 24 hours each way to a camp that must be the furthest north east of the lot. Driving ourselves helped keep the price down. Seven of us at about $3K each. Likely should have cost us more, due to some of the fuel was subsidized. The camp is called kiskimaastakin - way cheaper than some of the others, albeit with less bells and whistles.

Four of us went to kiskimaastakin in 2014 and filled our tags. It is different hunting there in December..-30 Celsius. I shot mine 275 yards with 30-06 180 gr. Transportation was easier on the ice. It is definitely a no frills hunt but adequate. The other camp nearby is called the Mirage and has better and more guides but twice the money. Congrats John now where's my K3 in 7X65R? ��
 
I have to agree with you that Caribou meat is among the very best meat I have tasted. I prepared "starters" Sunday night form marinated back strap rolled in bacon and fried followed by a Shepard's pie made with Caribou mince meat and it was delicious.
