A friend of mine got a few of these , dated 1916 . No idea of what ammo they take or why the end of the barrle is threaded. Any help ?

Your rifle is almost certainly a 6.5 x 55mm Swedish Mauser (natch!). The threads are for a muzzle protector ring.

If the barrel is threaded on the end, I believe it's for a BFA (blank firing attachment) that was introduced in 1955 for wood bullets.

Definitely, the threads are for attaching a blank firing attachment.

Sniper rifles (m41) and early M96's (like mine) don't have the threads.
