Can I legally carry a .22LR as well as my shotgun when I am turkey hunting? I would like to bring my .22LR for rabbits with me in addition to my 12 gauge for turkey when walking to my hunting location.

Like every other question on the legality of hunting, it is in your PROVINCIAL regulations. No advice from the rest of Canada matters. And you do not say where you are from. So a little more information about your location would help us to help you, or just look it up in your local regs.

I'm in Ontario.

There are no rabbit seasons open during turkey season. Also, how much of a chance would you have getting a turkey after discharging a rifle on your way to your stand?

There are no rabbit seasons open during turkey season.

This is incorrect. "Rabbit" seasons end June 15 in WMU 1-50 & 53-59. There are turkey seasons in WMU 42, 45-50, and 53 to 59.

For moose hunting, it quite specifically states that you can only carry firearms that are legal for moose hunting. It doesn't make that distinction in the section on turkey hunting. Still, I would err on the side of caution and consult someone at the MNR.

I posed a similar question to an Ontario CO about carrying an over under, shotgun 22 combo turkey hunting even though you have no 22 ammo and his response was he would charge. I would say 22 and turkey gear is a no go in Ontario

I sent an email to the MNR asking a similar question regarding carrying a second firearm for small game while deer hunting. The response was yes I can provided that it is an any gun season for deer (i.e. rifle or shotgun or bow or muzzle loader) and not restricted to shotgun/muzzle loader or bow (no rifle) and that I am not hunting with an apprentice hunter as we would be restricted to 1 firearm between us. ( I carry this letter with me should I be ever questioned on it by a LEO). My interpretation of this pertaining to turkey hunting would be that you could not as the TYPES of firearms allowed is restricted i.e. shotgun or bow only. I also asked this question (regarding the firearms during deer season) to 2 MNR officers at the sportsman show and their answers were the same. Hope this helps but in the end you would be wise to talk to the MNR directly especially the officer in your area as he will likely be the one whom you will be dealing with.

If I am not mistaken, there is a new spring season around Sudbury and parts nearby. Rabbits (hares) are open until June or so in many areas around Sudbury.

I would say yes you can carry two guns. One would have to unloaded and encased at all times and still leaves it open to interpretation from the CO. Why risk it ?. just take a bow and be good for both plus more challenging.

You can carry 2 firearms at one time, provided that they BOTH comply with the particular seasons that are open at that time.

Example: Deer season (SG & ML only) you cannot carry a rifle to shoot coyotes, along with your ML or SG.

Coyote hunting ( deer, moose closed) you can carry a SG and a rifle.

It depends on what seasons are open or closed and their particular firearm requirements.

In the OP's situation, he can't carry a 2 firearms because you are not allowed to have a rifle while turkey hunting.

Thank you. I stand corrected.
