Carrying handguns at the Range?

RSO Course

I missed that - what are you refering to? The TSE course, Black Badge, something else?

Beltfed,

There is a group of people from south of Calgary that are contacting ranges and F&W clubs telling or more like selling them that "new rules for ranges" are in place that require RSO being present at ranges in Alberta. They have an RSO course laid prepaired and are selling it for $85 per person attending if I remember correctly.

Our club promptly told them no thanks. Starting a conversation off with lying/misleading discussions will get you ignored.

Are you kidding me?! You really read that far into that useless piece of paper called an ATT? You're at the range, leave it hot and carry it. After all I thought we treated all firearms as if they are loaded AT ALL TIMES. And something about not pointing a firearm at anything you don't intend to destroy. And something about keep your finger off the trigger until your sights are on target and you've made the CONSCIOUS decision to fire. And be sure of whats before and after your target(foreground and background).

Maybe its just me but these four rules seem to work whenever there are guns in play. They also seem to work with all guns whether they are loaded or not. Just saying....:bangHead:

TDC

Holy crap, cool off TDC. I never suggested I thought they were valid or a good idea, I was merely pointing out where there is a condition/requirement/suggestion/whatever on your ATT that guns are not to be carried unless actively target shooting. Whether you like it or not, that document will be what a court applies if you get your ass in a sling for breaking its provisions.

Personally, I'm good with Cooper's rules of handling and nothing more. And that would be applied everywhere, not just at the range.

For someone to walk downrange a ceasefire is in effect.
When a ceasefire is called all weapons must be left on the line with the actions open and everyone must be behind the ceasefire line unless going downrange changing targets.

I don't know of any RO that would allow anyone onto the range with a firearm in their posession.

I have no idea if the rules are different in BC but I was under the impression that these were national.

That is grossly incorrect.

Yes the word "no" was missing from my original post as Misanthropist states. ####ing Blackberrys.

At my course here in Ontario, there is no stupid 3 month wait before your ATT. Just pay your membership fees, sign a paper, and wait the 1-2 weeks for your ATT and when you get it, come and shoot.

There is a divide between some members at the range that I attend. There is the Shotgun community and the Handgun community. The main clubhouse is were the indoor handgun range is located, and the washrooms, meeting tables, and commonroom. I am pretty sure that some of the crusty old skeet shooters get pissy if the handgunners come in to use the washroom, with a pistol in there holster, because everyone hangs out and chats were the washrooms are located. It seems like a bit of a divide, and some of the handgunners pretty much look at the old shotgunners and and keep on walking to the washroom or pop machine with there handgun in the holster, as they should. The feeling is, if you don't like being around guns, then leave the range.

I am a relatively new club member, so I don't exactly feel like I have been there long enough to start pissing off old shotgun members, so I don't walk around the clubhouse with a holstered pistol. I do walk around the small handgun range, with my pistol holstered, to pick up another one of my guns and give it a turn. I really don't like to leave my guns on the open, in a box on the table behind me, although I do know that nothing is going to happen to them. Its kind of like leaving your newborn baby unattended in a shopping cart. Not my babies.

Maybe I will eventually tell the old shotgunners...up yours and walk by with a unloaded pistol in my holster to go to the washroom or get a pop from the machine, but not for a couple more months anyways....lol.

I too carry my handguns down range in a holster if I am using my rifles and handguns, I leave the handguns @ bench if just shooting those. I am a member on a private outdoor range and have never been called on it by an RO....but I am pretty sure it is illegal on any range to not leave any gun opened/unloaded on the bench, definetly a no,no @ a indoor range. Pretty interesting post since it doesn't make sense leaving a gun and ammo @ your back unsupervised but then there are the laws?....stupid laws! LOL

There are no laws about this, please provide where it says this in the firearms act.

Range rules are not law no matter what some people will tell you. Read the act it is only 75 pages.

When I go to the outdoor range for handgun, shotgun, or rifle, handgun is always holstered. If I'm planning to go prone with the rifle, I'm wearing a jacket for three reasons:
- Keeps the elbows from getting dirty
- keeps the pistol from getting dirty
- keeps people from staring at a barrel pointed uprange

Now before everyone gets all uppity about a backwards-facing pistol on the range - if we were all CCW, everyone prone at the beach, on sliding hills, etc would have a random-pointing pistols. At least mine is unloaded, the mag is on the other hip, and I'd never draw from prone.

"if we were all CCW, everyone prone at the beach, on sliding hills, etc would have a random-pointing pistols."

That's the thing. Holsters are meant to be a safe place to keep a loaded handgun.

When I go downrange to change a target, I load my pisto and take shots at stuff on the way out. gate

Carry if you want to carry, don't if you don't, and don't act like an ass. Anything else is just safety nazi BS. Government induced or not. - dan

This sounds good to me. You guys from Alberta?

Most people Holster up as soon as they sign in at my range. Unless they are lots of people, most shooters can do as they please around here I think. 9 out of 10 times I go, I am the only person at the range

I've gone from the top of the hill to the MP range at VFG holstered, in my van, with my AR on the passenger seat (I most certainly did not case and lock, though the AR was cleared - I was on private property designated as a firearms range facility). Guys, it's a GUN CLUB why do we need to invent issues where there should be none. I support loaded guns on people's hips at the mall, the gas station and the bank and even school property fer chrissakes. Why in the name of all that is rational would I expect anyone not to have a loaded gun on their hip at a GUN CLUB. Sheesh.

You know -- this makes too much sense. Are you alright?

If just this THINKING was included in the wanna-be armed community we would not point fingers and cause problems for other members because of rules.

I have not come across a range nazi in Windsor and I am happy to say so.

At my range (Guelph Rod and Gun Club for The_Sicilian...) we cannot shoot alone. The probationary period is a full year. The only 'safe' position for handguns is on the bench, action open, and magazines removed. No mention if an exception is made of holster use for action disciplines, but one may exist informally.

All I'm getting out of this thread is that I live in the wrong damn province. And I'm stuck here for another 3 years. Goddamnitalltohell.
