----Excuse the punctuaction; this keyboard is sub-standard------

This may be an odd question.

What implications are there for me, since I dont have a car.
How does this impact me in terms of the un-restricted and restricted firearms out there (transporting said firearms, etc).

Of course, things are further away and all.

Anyone have any guns while at the same time not having a car.

Again, excuse the punctuation.

Are you asking if you can transport a restricted on public transit? I think you'd have to call the CFO and the transit on that one, but I don't think that you could. Maybe in the trunk of a taxi.

I had a buddy that would pack up his handgun (as per the law) and about 500rds of ammunition and bike the 10+km to the range. Looking back on it now, and remembering his route, he would go through the roughest parts of town too..lol...maybe not the best idea, but still considered legal i believe.

Cheers,
Chris

Transit is a no go, as the B.C. CFO told me.

Has to be transported in a vehicle. Does not have to be your vehicle.

If it has a trunk, it has to go in there, or if not, behind the seat out of sight.

I had to take a taxi ONE BLOCK down the road to bring my SKS home.

It's crappy but that is how it is.

There was a time a walk on could pack his firearm on the ferry to the Island or vice versa..Sad those days are gone due to the world today..

I use to take my restricted's on the TTC all the time. I had no car. I didn't put them in a case with S&W written all over it. (It was in a pistol case, which in turn was put into a back pack with my gear and ammo). Looked like any other student going to school, or schmuck going to work.

Restricted-- trigger locked and in a locked case, your good to go. But to avoid extra hassle, don't announce what your carrying.

Can't say much about non-restricted. Since I've never done it on the bus, but why can't you just throw it in a hard case and put a padlock on it? Sure in theory you can walk down the street with it unloaded and slung over your shoulder, but you will get charged for "scaring the public" and anything else the Crown Attorney wants to pursue a long and ambitious political career.

Reasoning behind the padlock, is if you get stopped by the police, you can at least say that you are fully compliant with the law and that you taking extra steps to avoid "scaring the public".

You forgot to mention pogo-stick and hot air balloon... :)

I would imagine the TTC would not be flattered if I were to bring a gun on the train. If it is hidden and unloaded, abiding by all the federal statutes, it should not be a problem. Worst case scenario is I could get a fine for a by-law infraction; if such a by-law exists. Or I could get waisted by the ETF.

Hmm. Better consider my options.

Pogo-stick seems reasonable.

There aren't any cases of anyone being charged for "scaring the public". Unfortunately you do have to keep PC about it. Theoretically you can just wear it open, unloaded and slung over your shoulder (non-restricted of course). If you were brave enough to do, the worst that would happen is the police would harass you, you would then speak to their supervisor who would likely have to look it up in the criminal code and then they'd let you go. Of course just as is the case with carrying something like a large knife or sword, it's not illegal, but you can be refused entry onto private property such as the TTC.

You've got it right for the restricteds though. That's why it's supposed to be in an OPAQUE case. Of course Smith & Wesson would be a give away haha. Don't believe everything the CFC tells you over the phone. Most of them don't know half the laws and they'll make stuff up just to cover their asses.

Should be no problem as long as it is carried unloaded in a locked case. Take it on the TTC. They'll try to get you, the city is full of scared illogical sheeple, but in the end because it is in a case they can't even get you for public disturbance. I think I'm gonna go get on a bus right now... :)

I spent a while hunting for a rule that prohibited carrying firearms on the TTC and couldn't find one... not that there 100% isn't one, but I couldn't find it, and I am usually pretty good at finding that sort of thing... probably means they just didn't think of it yet... expect the new rule to come out as soon as they read this thread...

Good Question

I have never thought about it but if they say no...it could be a costly court battle. On yourside you do have the Hunting Heritage Act in Ontario. So sighting in your hunting rifle is to be expected. You are licenced ,gun cased ,locked and unloaded. You are legal . Its public not private transportation you pay taxes and your activity is lawful. I think I would have a witness and a small video and audio taping device when, and if Metro Police are called re this.

You have a gun in a case, as a bus driver, I wouldn't have a problem with it. My coworkers, some of them carp their pants when they hear I have guns locked up, 10 miles away from them. Just don't be surprised if you get a hassle, is all I can say. You might get lucky, might be my bus, but out of 500 buses running, I'm only driving 1 at any given time. Usual rules apply, be safe, don't do anything to attract attention. I always tell people, just mind your business and be quiet, you'll be amazed what you can do. If it's in a non-obvious case, that'd be your best bet.

A custom case that resembles something other than a gun case should do the trick. Methinks.

Thanks for the advice everyone.

As far as I know, it would be illegal to prohibit the transport of a properly papered and secured firearm on any form of public transit. To do so would be a violation of your rights via the violation of the Charter of Rights and Freedoms regarding prejudice due to social/economic status. By the way, I thought the TTC was publicly owned...

Interesting argument, but I think you are wildly optimistic...
