cartridge choice...conflicted

Hey Nuts, Im in a rutt here
I'm planing a build, but i can't seem to come to terms for a cartridge to use. What i would like is something that i can have bit of reach to it(some were around the 500 mark) its mainly for punching holes but i wouldn't mind it taking down some game as well. my primary right now is a 270 WSM, but i would like to save it as a hunting rifle for the most part and i don't really want burn out the barrel, that why the new build. My thoughts right now was a .243, .308, 7mm or .223(i have a mini so keeping with the same ammo is a plus). Im open to others,but precision is the name of the game so what ever you got is much appreciated

Its hard to choose a cartridge.
I have a very accurate 308 I dont use because its too heavy. I don't use my old 6,5X55 because I cannot get better than 3/4 moa out of it. So I need to sell one and rebarel the other one but which one.

Many cartridges are give better performance than the 308, but the 308 is easy to tune and barrel usualy last quite longer than the others.

7MM is head and shoulders above the others for precision at extreme ranges, and significantly more flexible as a hunting caliber.
 
Do you reload? 7mm burns alot of powder. 223 might be light for hunting. 243 is a good performer well past the 500 yards you mentioned. I am leaning towards a 243 or something in the 6.5 mm category. I have a 308 and it is a capable cartridge at that distance and with the range of projectiles in 30 cal you could certainly work up a great hunting load.

barrel life
good for hunting

.308 sounds good imo.
 
7mm or 6.5 or .308 in some of the short actions will be just fine.

It isn't like it used to be, there are a lot of components with great technology in them.

500 isn't far for target anymore , well it is, but you know, for game, just make sure you select a projectile that will perform as need at the impact velocity.

I like 7mm chamberings.

Don't go crazy overbore, no need.
 
i do reload, and 500 yard shot for game is something i'm not going to chance, i should have mentioned it was more of a paper puncher. its just nice to have something for deer at 200y shot max. I realize the 223 isn't something really for bigger game, i just threw it out there because i have something in a 223 already, unfortunately the Mini isn't known for accuracy. I put down 500 because some cartridges can be easily worked up to something more then 500 so i don't limit my self for distance if i choose to go farther. Any ways thank you for contributions so far and i hope to see more.
 
In that case , do a 7mm-08 or a .260 , you will get a long life , and affordable and common components, and easy to tune and easy to shoot.

I won't comment on distance I have taken game, but the chamberings are capable , if the bullet lands on target.

I do a load for target , plinking , varmint and one for big game.

Don't feel compelled to go oddball.

Always .308 Win if you wanna.

223 is a great choice also, if I had to narrow it down, it would be between the 223 (at least a 1 in 8 twist) and 6.5x47. Both have pros and cons.
 
The 6.5's are the ticket. Most have very manageble recoil, don't need a half pound of powder per round and quite a large selection of high BC bullets that will be great for longer distance shooting
 
I would say stay with 223. It can reach 500 with 55gn and even farther with heavier bullets. Plus it will be the cheapest round to shoot. As far as taking game, you could use a heavier solid bullet and still be able to take small deer. Any bigger game than that and you have your 270 wsm.

284 Winchester... It's a bottleneck cartridge with a rebated rim: Standard bolt face, short action but .501" body. Performance wise it falls between 7mm-08 and 280rem but almost near capacity of the latter. Actually it's a good round for what the OP desires.

My suggestion is the 6.5X55: Components are common (relatively considering the shortages) and various and it has been a proven winner since 1894.
 
284 is a good bet too! But the 6.5x47 will match the ballistics likely, for less money. Either way, you have a good choice in brass. 220 Russian is also something to consider.
