Cartridge choice for a woman

Calibre shmalibre! It's the gun that counts. My wife shoots a youth stock 7mm-08 with 4" eye relief scope with no issues. I'm sure with a little practice a 30-06 in the same gun would be fine also. It's gotta fit or any calibre is too much. That being said the 7mm-08 is a nice efficient cartridge that is likely to suite her.

I've had quite a few rifles and hunted a fair bit now and find a regular .270 is still my favorite and works fine. I'm a 5'5" lady and find the biggest problem for me is getting long guns that fit!! I really like the Savage lady hunter and the Browning youth sized x-bolt. I love shooting all calibers but fit is it. Shotguns that fit are even more important.

So much truth in that statement. Fit is everything.

My nice 140 / 5,10 shoots a 300win mag . when she got and asked me to help her sight it in I thought that it was to much gun for her. But she proved me wrong. Started her on a 22 to get her her confidence and trigger skills and how to breath. Then got her on the 300 win mag, dam! She was shooting better than me. My be I should stick to teaching.

7-08 is getting more popular every year, starting to see not only stock on the ammo shelves but variety as well and that's a gooood sign

Couldn't agree more. My dad bought me a Rem. Model 788 in 7mm-08 for my 12th birthday. That was 20 years ago, and while it wasn't difficult to find ammo, I personally never met anyone who had a rifle chambered in it for years. Probably close to 10 years. Now it seems like everyone is getting one, and rightfully so. Little recoil, reaches out as far as I'm personally comfortable shooting, and can be reloaded with many, many different bullet and powder combinations. Very versatile.

As far as I am concerned, the 7mm-08 is simply the 7x57 in a new suit. As such, it is very well suited for a woman to use up to and including Elk & Moose.

I trained all 3 of my daughters to shoot the 7x57 [started with the 222, then the 6mm, then the 7x57] They had no problems handling the 7x57 at all.

So, your recommendation is a good one IMHO.

Regards, Dave.

My 260 has very little kick. I'd recommend this cartridge to any new or experienced marksman. Very capable round for just about any cx-2 game. 7mm-08 would probably be decent too.

Absolutely can't go wrong with a 7-08. I got the Tikka T3 Hunter for our grand daughter, a small lady, and she shoots it great.
As has been pointed out, the 7-08 is just a twin of the famous 7x57. I always remember an article Jack O'Connor wrote in his later years in Outdoor Life Magazine. He stated how many hundred head of game he had either shot, or saw shot, with a 7x57 and how many hundred head of game he had either shot, or saw shot, with the 7mm Remington magnum and he really couldn't see any difference in killing power between the two!
He said a good hit meant a dead animal with either and a poor hit meant a wounded animal, with either calibre.

Which begs the question, if the 7-08 is OK for a woman to use for moose, why can't men?

This question needs no answer.....What's sauce for the Goose, is sauce for the Gander, lol.

FWIW, I have shot a lot of game with the 7x57, and it remain one of my favorites....took last fall's Whitetail with my 700C in 7x57.

Looking for a rifle for my wife more suitable to elk and moose. It will be 7mm-08 chambering. So many choices now for women.
Browning Midas Micra, Savage Lady Hunter, or (probably the one she gets) the Weatherby Girls Hunt 2 (this has the most customizable stock for length and cast-off for "woman parts" when shouldering. And then it'll get hydro-dipped in Muddy Girl Camo. Hey, it's her rifle, just buy 'em.
