any one know of a list that brakes down cartridges by what powders they can use? not necessarily looking for load date but more like cartridge "x" can use powders W-Y-Z. and odd request, but long story short, since selling my 338lm, iv got bout 15lbs of retumbo powder that is just sitting there.

and no, you cant buy it :)

None exist to my knowledge and for good reason - almost any powder can be safely used in most cartidges, just not optimally.

Retumbo for example can be used in everything from 223 to 50 BMG - and more.

It's unusual that someone would choose chamberings based on the powder they own, but to each their own.

Buy the latest Hodgdon manual and have a look at the latest load data. It won't include every cartridge retumbo can be used in but it will include the ones it works best in.

haha i know its odd and not the best way to do things, but really i have no plans for a big boomer in my future and im mid build, like i know the 280AI with 175smk can use it with good resaults, but for all the hassle to trade / sell the powder unless its local its just easier to build my rifle with something that can use it, then swap to a better powder when its gone.

Joe, i was looking on hodgdon website, they do have it listed in what it can be used it the best, but its alot of work to scroll threw all the bullet and cartridge type to see it listted. unless they list it differently in their manual, its all the scrolling im trying to avoid

You can see what cartridges are listed for a specific powder on the hodgdon reloading site,ultimate_monkey. If you put in a specific cartidge that you know uses that powder; like 7mm.; then go to powder side and specify Retumbo only. If you click on the cartridge box again, it will only bring up the calibres that use that powder in the drop box.

Ah cool ! I didn't notice that on the site . I thought that would only show the loads used for that caliber and powder didn't realize it would list all the ones that used the powder

I suck with the inter netz

While I would never want to discourage someone from finding an excuse to buy another gun/caliber, it would be way less work to simply sell the powder (and get a good price in the current climate of shortages) and then buy whatever tickles your fancy.

oh im sure lots of people would buy it! i just dont want the hastle of selling it, then having to find more powder....

lets put it this way, my local store is now charging 50+ for 1lbs of varget..... and top it off they have almost no stock of any thing, need less to say i go else where when i can... guys in the "gun room" are great to deal with and have always treated me right, but they dont set the prices ....
