Carying slugs when hunting grouse

Anyone know what the legalities are when hunting grouse in AB? I hunt alone, with my dog for grouse and I came across a dead deer that had obviously been killed by a predatory animal in the past few days. Around 40 yards up the road was some yellow tape blocking access to the area I came from and a sign saying "warning, dangerous bear in area". I must have either come in through the back way or someone ripped the sign down on the road I entered. While I didn't see any bears, i want to make sure I'm protected if I do. There were no postings on any of the government sites noting any closures and the sign looked rather new.

Would Fish and Wildlife see this as I'm hunting something else as well if I happen to be checked?

Get yourself a bear licence. In NL you are only allowed to carry slugs if you have a big game licence.

Anyone can say that the slug is for protection, proving it in court is another thing.

Basically: Carry slugs and you are immediately suspected of poaching.

I'm not encouraging anyone to break any laws but if the OP is not enjoying his grouse hunt because of the threat of bears, then a couple extra ounces of weight in his pocket is worth it's weight in gold. Lol

In Ontario, if there is a concurrent open big game season, then you must have a licence for that species in order to carry slugs.

Perfectly legal in BC. It's legal to shoot grouse with a single projectile too. So none of this nonsense from some provinces. I suspect it's legal in AB too, but reading your regs to determine if grouse can only be shot with shot is the first step.

Nothing illegal about it that I know of...in fact you could shoot grouse with them if you like. Some guys I know run two bird shot and a slug in their shotgun for just such a reason. But as always, your best reference is here Alberta Hunting Regulations

Man you guys have some screwed up regulations in Ontario.....just when I think Alberta is as bad as it gets...Ontario comes in for the save....lol Sadly we are trying hard to catch up though!

You'll never be fast enough to unload and reload if Yogi is PO'd at you. As mentioned, you need to read the AB hunting regs.
We get to hunt upland birds with an under 500 fps air pistol. And we can use any cf cartridge, including FMJ's, for deer. So there. snicker.

Since you can shoot coyote's without a license as well i don't see what the issue is on having slugs with you while you're bird hunting, you know, in case a "coyote" should attack you or the dog

We can kill them with a rock if we want. As for fmj....not sure why you'd want to. Lots of screwed up regulations no matter where you hunt and they keep making more!

but what if you don't have a chiappa triple threat?

If you mean a pump or a semi, good luck cycling out the other rounds before yogi closes the distance.

It's better than having them in your pocket. I'd be cycling the other rounds into his face if it were me.

The Browning Maxxus has a magazine cut off that allows you to spit the one out of the chamber and drop load one directly in... speeds things up considerably... especially if you simply fire the first one out.

can you find the one to drop load in the time it takes you to realize the situation you are in, chamber, fire, all before a charging bear closes the distance?
